INTRODUCTION

This Open File Report presents the lithologic (materials) logs of test borings carried out at 24 sites within the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario during the month of August, 1978. The borings were made to augment the information base on sand and gravel resources within the northern part of the city. Though large sand and gravel aggregates resources exist, there is some concern as to the actual extent and thickness of the more useable materials. The information is presented here only to

make it available to the public before analyses of samples are available and before a more comprehensive report can be prepared on the aggregate resources of Sault Ste. Marie.

The borings were advanced by Dominion Soil Investiga tions Inc. on contract to the Ontario Ministy of Natural Resources. A CME 750 hollow stem auger was used and most samples were recovered with a split spoon sampler at five foot' intervals. Penetration and sample recovery was good in

sandy gravels and sand but auger refusal usually occurred soon after coarse pebble and cobble gravels were encountered.

On site geological supervision and sampling was carried out by James G. Leyland.

The co-operation of pit operators and owners in provid ing access to their land is gratefully acknowledged.
