ECA Library partners with Ethiopia Reads on training of librarians
Addis Ababa, 05 July 2012 (ECA) –The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with Ethiopia Reads, an international Non-Governmental Organization that supports the development of Libraries, organized a three-day skills training aimed at building the capacity of over 80 library staff from around the country. Held on 3-5 July at the Addis Ababa University, the training tackled a number of issues, including: the basics of cataloging and classification, collection
maintenance and development, the five laws of library science, and the role and responsibilities of school librarians.
Mr. Dana Roskey, Ethiopia Reads Country Director expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the ECA and said he viewed this as the beginning of an exciting partnership.”
According to Ethiopia Reads, most of the staff that participated in the training had no background in library work prior to their current positions. Mr. Roskey therefore underscored that the meeting and learning from ECA Librarians was both inspirational and motivating to the staff working for the libraries that Ethiopia Reads supports.”
Ms. Aida Opoku-Mensah, Director, ICT, Science and Technology Division (ISTD) at the ECA lauded the training as “an excellent example of how ECA can help raise the level of library and information management services throughout Africa and increase the capacity of Africans to develop their professional skills.”
Additional partners supporting the training were Addis Ababa University, USAID and the Ministry of Education.
Ethiopia Reads is an international NGO that aims to create a reading culture in Ethiopia by connecting children with books. It has helped to develop a network of 62 school and community libraries.
