ECA to Host International GIS Conference

Addis Ababa, 12 August 2009 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in collaboration with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Society of Ethiopia and ESRI Eastern Africa, is organizing the Fourth Annual ESRI Users Conference taking place for the first time in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 24- 25 September this year.

ESRI is the world’s leading firm in designing and developing GIS technology.

The main goals of the conference are to work on building rational and cost-based approaches to GIS planning, design and implementation; and to share information on ESRI technology and its future directions.

Participants are drawn from ESRI software users in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Djibouti. Several international participants have also been invited, and many distinguished industry professionals and commercial exhibitors are also expected to attend.

Participants range from GIS end users to senior executives and industry leaders, including GIS practitioners and analysts, GIS department and project managers, GIS educators and trainers, GIS application developers and IT managers and specialists.

Many technical papers will be presented at the conference. Courses offered at the conference include the ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server, the latest programmes that offer improved performance of dynamic map publishing and increased sharing of geographic information. In addition, a GIS in local government seminar will be held to highlight the benefits of GIS with respect to increased revenue and improved service delivery.

The main sessions will cover environment and natural resources; planning, land management and economic development;

GIS science, technology and education; transportation, utilities and public works; and health and public safety.

All papers presented at the conference are eligible for publication in the conference proceedings, which will be widely distributed to al users. More information on the conference is available on ESRI Eastern Africa website: www.esriea.co.ke.
