Recent S c a n d i n a v i a n r e s e a r c h s t u d i e s h a v e p r o v i d e d some e x p l a n a t i o n s f o r t h e e x c e l l e n c e of masonry l a i d up i n c o l d w e a t h e r u s i n g traditional t e c h n i q u e s . T h i s h a s c u r r e n t s i g n i f i c a n c e i n North America b e c a u s e of (1) t h e i n c r e a s i n g growth of w i n t e r c o n s t r u c t i o n , and ( 2 ) b u i l d i n g code

r e q u i r e m e n t s c o n s i d e r e d r e s t r i c t i v e by t h o s e f a m i l i a r w i t h t h e t e c h n i q u e s and r e s u l t s of t h e t r a d i t i o n a l p r o c e d u r e s . Too few y o u n g e r p e o p l e a r e e n t e r i n g i t , a n d t h e a v e r a g e age o f t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n w o r k e r i s i n c r e a s - i n g from y e a r t o y e a r . I n c r e a s i n g c o n v e r - s i o n t o p r e f a b r i c a t i o n , a n d a n e v e n g r e a t e r d e g r e e o f m e c h a n i z a t i o n a t t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n s i t e t h a n we now h a v e , w i l l r e l i e v e t h e s i t u a t i o n t o some e x t e n t , b u t w i l l by n o means e l i m i n a t e a l l t h e d i f f i c u l t i e s . We must a l s o e x p l o r e o t h e r p o s s i b i l i t i e s . One o f t h e r e a s o n s f o r t h e breakdown o f r e c r u i t i n g l i e s i n t h e f a c t t h a t a l a r g e p r o p o r t i o n o f b u i l d i n g a c t i v i t y i s s t i l l s e a s o n a l . The c o n d u c t i n g o f w i n t e r o p e r a t i o n s i n c o n s t r u c t i o n i s n o t a s i m p l e m a t t e r i n s u c h a s e v e r e c l i m a t e a s o u r s . On t h e o t h e r h a n d , i t i s o b v i o u s t h a t i f b u i l d i n g i s t o a t t r a c t new p e o p l e i t must b e a b l e t o a s s u r e them s t e a d y employment t h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r . I n one way o r a n o t h e r , we must s o l v e t h e p r o b l e m by w i n t e r c o n s t r u c t i o n , a n d we must d e v e l o p t h e methods a n d t e c h n o l o g i e s s u i t a b l e f o r low t e m p e r a t u r e s . W i n t e r masonry i s one o f t h e a r e a s a b o u t w h i c h , u n f o r t u n a t e l y , we know a l l t o o l i t t l e , a n d v e r y few s t u d i e s h a v e b e e n p u b l i s h e d o n t h e s u b j e c t . T h e r e a r e some, however, a n d w e i n t e n d h e r e t o t r y t o a s s e m b l e some o f t h e a v a i l a b l e e x p e r i e n c e , a n d t o d i s c u s s t h e r e s e a r c h r e s u l t s t h a t h a v e e m e r g e d . L e t us f i r s t t a k e a c l o s e r l o o k a t what i s d e f i n i t e l y known.

We can i m m e d i a t e l y e s t a b l i s h t h a t t h e r e a c t u a l l y i s one method which s o l v e s most o f t h e p r o b l e m s o f masonry i n w i n t e r , namely, con-

s t r u c t i o n u n d e r a f u l l e n c l o s u r e . T h i s method h a s b e e n u s e d f o r some t i m e w i t h g r e a t s u c c e s s i n Canada, a n d more r e c e n t l y i t h a s a l s o b e e n t r i e d i n t h e S c a n d i n a v i a n c o u n t r i e s . Denmark h a s b e e n t h e l o n g e s t i n t h e f i e l d ( F i g u r e 1) a n d t h e r e i s a t l e a s t one f i r m t h e r e w h i c h c o n s e q u e n t l y u s e s e n c l o s u r e s i n i t s w i n t e r c o n s t r u c t i o n . The r e s u l t s h a v e b e e n v e r y good, a n d e c o n o m i c a l as w e l l , a n d i t goes w i t h o u t

s a y i n g t h a t w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s a r e v e r y g r e a t l y i m p r o v e d i n t h i s way ( F i g u r e 2 ) . B u i l d i n g u n d e r e n c l o s u r e s i s b e s t s u i t e d t o t h e mass p r o d u c t i o n of small b u i l d i n g s , and t h e e n c l o s u r e c a n o f t e n b e made moveable w i t h t h e a i d o f w h e e l s r u n n i n g on r a i l s a l o n g b o t h s i d e s o f a row of b u i l d i n g s . E n c l o s u r e s c a n a l s o b e u s e d i n t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n of t a l l b u i l d i n g s , h o i s t i n g them upwards as t h e b u i l d i n g g o e s h i g h e r . I n many c a s e s , e s p e c i a l l y where s k e l e t o n c o n s t r u c t i o n i s u s e d , t h e e n c l o s u r e c a n b e s i m p l i f i e d down t o a t i g h t c o v e r i n g o f t h e walls s t o r e y by s t o r e y ( F i g u r e 3 ) . If p l a s t i c i s u s e d f o r t h e e n c l o s u r e m a t e r i a l o r i t s t o p , t h e r a d i a t i o n f r o m o u t s i d e w i l l p r o v i d e a s t r o n g h e a t i n g e f f e c t , e v e n i n t h e c o l d e s t w i n t e r w e a t h e r . O b v i o u s l y t h i s g r e a t l y s i m p l i f i e s t h e h e a t i n g p r o b l e m . T h e r e a r e two a r g u m e n t s w h i c h a r e o f t e n u s e d a g a i n s t b u i l d i n g u n d e r e n c l o s u r e s . One i s t h a t i t i s d i f f i c u l t t o employ c r a n e s t o any g r e a t e x t e n t . I n t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f small b u i l d i n g s t h i s i s n o t a n i m p o r t a n t c o n s i d e r a t i o n , s i n c e o t h e r means o f t r a n s p o r t , e . g . , f o r k l i f t t r u c k s , c a n b e u s e d i n s t e a d . I n t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f t a l l b u i l d - i n g s , i t i s n e c e s s a r y t o r e s o r t t o o t h e r h o i s t i n g s y s t e m s . The o t h e r a r g u m e n t a g a i n s t f u l l e n c l o s u r e s i s t h a t t h e y a d d c o n s i d e r a b l y t o t h e c o s t o f c o n s t r u c t i o n . Danish e x p e r i e n c e , however, i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h i s c e r t a i n l y n e e d n o t a l w a y s be t h e c a s e . I n any e v e n t , t h e method h a s s u c h g r e a t a d v a n t a g e s t h a t i t s h o u l d r e c e i v e v e r y t h o r o u g h c o n s i d e r a - t i o n e a c h t i m e b e f o r e b e i n g r e j e c t e d .

However, g i v e n t h e p r e s e n t s i t u a t i o n i n Norway, we may v e r y w e l l e x p e c t t h a t a c o n s i d e r a b l e p r o p o r t i o n o f a l l w i n t e r masonry w i l l h a v e t o b e c a r r i e d o u t f o r many y e a r s t o come w i t h o u t c o m p l e t e p r o t e c t i o n .

We a r e i m m e d i a t e l y on f a r l e s s c e r t a i n g r o u n d r e g a r d i n g b o t h t h e r i s k w e t a k e a n d t h e e f f o r t t h a t c a n b e made t o i m p r o v e t h e s i t u a t i o n . We know, however, t h a t i t i s by no means i m p o s s i b l e t o c a r r y o u t b r i c k - work a t low t e m p e r a t u r e s . T h e r e a r e a number o f e x a m p l e s o f good

masonry e r e c t e d u n d e r q u i t e s e v e r e c o n d i t i o n s . The r e s u l t s show t h a t v e r y o f t e n masonry g o e s w e l l i n r e a l l y c o l d w e a t h e r . I n any c a s e , i t i s a f a c t t h a t i n n o r t h e r n Sweden and n o r t h e r n F i n l a n d , b r i c k s are l a i d a t much l o w e r t e m p e r a t u r e s t h a n i s a t t e m p t e d i n more m o d e r a t e c l i m a t i c z o n e s .

On t h e o t h e r h a n d , i t i s a l s o p o s s i b l e t o f i n d examples of damage due t o t h e f a c t t h a t t h e masonry was c a r r i e d o u t i n w i n t e r , and t h i s c a n u s u a l l y b e t r a c e d t o t h e p r o p e r t i e s o f t h e g r e e n m o r t a r . O r d i n a r y m o r t a r , e s p e c i a l l y t h e k i n d we u s e h e r e i n Norway, i s a p p l i e d w i t h a v e r y l a r g e e x c e s s o f w a t e r . If t h e t e m p e r a t u r e i s low a n d t h e w a t e r c a n n o t e v a p o r a t e v e r y r a p i d l y , i c e c r y s t a l s w i l l f o r m i n t h e l a r g e p o r e s . The c r y s t a l s o f t e n t a k e t h e f o r m o f l o n g , p a r a l l e l n e e d l e s ( F i g u r e 4 ) , a n d when t h e i c e o c c u p i e s a g r e a t e r volume t h a n t h e w a t e r , i t w i l l r e s u l t i n d e f o r m a t i o n s a n d m o d i f i c a t i o n s i n t h e s t r u c t u r e o f t h e m o r t a r . Sometimes t h i s d o e s n o harm, b u t o f t e n t h e d e f o r m a t i o n s c a u s e t h e h a r d e n e d m o r t a r t o a c q u i r e l e s s s t r e n g t h , a n d i t may c r a c k o r e v e n crumble away. I t h a s l o n g b e e n known t h a t t h i s depends e n t i r e l y on w h e t h e r t h e m o r t a r i s e n t i r e l y g r e e n o r h a s begun t h e h a r d e n i n g p r o c e s s by t h e t i m e i t f r e e z e s . A s o f t , g r e e n m o r t a r c a n w i t h s t a n d c o n s i d e r a b l e s t r a i n s w i t h o u t damage, b u t a s t i f f , p a r t l y c u r e d o r h a r d e n e d one i s v e r y s e n s i t i v e t o c r a c k i n g by i c e .

A n o t h e r i m p o r t a n t f a c t o r i s t h a t b o n d i n g a g e n t s s u c h as l i m e o r cement c u r e much more s l o w l y at low t e m p e r a t u r e s t h a n h i g h . The c a r b o n a t i o n o f l i m e b e g i n s t o s l o w down a p p r e c i a b l y a t t e m p e r a t u r e s as h i g h as 5 - 6 ' ~ , and below t h e f r e e z i n g p o i n t t h e r e a c t i o n c e a s e s a l m o s t e n t i r e l y . F o r cement a n d masonry cement i t t a k e s a l o n g e r and l o n g e r t i m e b e t w e e n m i x i n g a n d s e t t i n g as t h e t e m p e r a t u r e d r o p s .

H a r d e n i n g a l s o p r o c e e d s more and more s l o w l y , and p r e s u m a b l y c e a s e s a l t o g e t h e r a t a r o u n d - 1 0 ' ~ . T h i s means t h a t , i n masonry w h i c h f r e e z e s w h i l e i t i s s t i l l f r e s h , t h e c h e m i c a l r e a c t i o n s i n g e n e r a l d o n o t

p r o c e e d . A s l o n g as t h e m o r t a r i s f r o z e n i t n e v e r t h e l e s s p o s s e s s e s c o n s i d e r a b l e s t r e n g t h , b u t l a t e r when i t thaws i t becomes s o f t a g a i n . I n t h e meantime, t h e b u i l d i n g may h a v e a d v a n c e d c o n s i d e r a b l y , a n d t h e l o a d s may e a s i l y h a v e become s o g r e a t t h a t l a r g e d e f o r m a t i o n s a r e e x p e r i e n c e d . If t h e walls thaw f r o m one s i d e , t h i s c a n l e a d t o t h e masonry g e t t i n g o u t o f plumb. T h e r e i s a l s o a d a n g e r t h a t some of t h e m o r t a r w i l l b e p r e s s e d o u t o f t h e j o i n t s , a n d t h a t c r a c k s w i l l form i n t h i s way b e t w e e n t h e m o r t a r and t h e b r i c k s .

A l l t h e s e a r e t h i n g s we h a v e known o r b e l i e v e d , b u t i t i s o n l y i n t h e l a s t y e a r t h a t we h a v e s t a r t e d , t o some e x t e n t , t o i n v e s t i g a t e

them e x p e r i m e n t a l l y . B e f o r e w i n t e r masonry c a n b e c o m p l e t e l y m a s t e r e d , we must f i r s t s o l v e a l o n g s e r i e s o f d e t a i l e d p r o b l e m s , a n d a g r e a t many n u m e r i c a l v a l u e s a n d boundary c o n d i t i o n s must be e s t a b l i s h e d . We n e e d t o know, f o r example, how m o i s t t h e m o r t a r must b e a n d t o what e x t e n t i t must be h a r d e n e d b e f o r e i t w i l l s u f f e r s e r i o u s damage on f r e e z i n g . We must d e t e r m i n e what b r i c k s a n d m o r t a r a r e b e s t f o r w i n t e r work, a n d w h e t h e r t h e b r i c k s s h o u l d be d r y o r w e t , warm o r c o l d . We must a l s o know t h e e x t e n t o f t h e r i s k p r e s e n t i n e a c h i n d i v i d u a l c a s e o f d a n g e r o u s d e f o r m a t i o n s , a n d t h e r e a r e many o t h e r p r o b l e m s t o b e s o l v e d as w e l l . 2 . Recent l a b o r a t o r y i n v e s t i g a t i o n s

An e x t e n s i v e w i n t e r masonry i n v e s t i g a t i o n h a s now b e e n u n d e r way i n F i n l a n d f o r some t i m e , and some o f t h e r e s u l t s h a v e a l r e a d y b e e n made a v a i l a b l e . T h i s a p p l i e s f i r s t a n d f o r e m o s t t o m o r t a r t e s t s , b u t t h e F i n n i s h s c i e n t i s t s a r e a l s o i n t h e c o u r s e o f d e t e r m i n i n g a number o f masonry p r o p e r t i e s u n d e r d i f f e r e n t t e m p e r a t u r e and c u r i n g c o n d i - t i o n s .

Here i n Norway, c i v i l e n g i n e e r A l f Waldum h a s b e e n w o r k i n g on

w i n t e r masonry as t h e main r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t a t NTH, a n d h e s u b s e q u e n t l y made a number o f s u p p l e m e n t a r y t e s t s i n c o o p e r a t i o n w i t h t h e NBI

L a b o r a t o r y i n Trondheim. I n t h e p r e s e n t d i s c u s s i o n w e s h a l l pay p a r t i c u l a r a t t e n t i o n t o t h e s e Norwegians' i n v e s t i g a t i o n s , b u t a compar- i s o n w i l l a l s o b e made w i t h t h e F i n n i s h r e s u l t s where t h e y a r e a v a i l - ab l e

Masonry t e s t s I n t h e masonry i n v e s t i g a t i o n s h e r e i n Norway, t h e s t r e n g t h i s u s u a l l y d e t e r m i n e d on o n e - b r i c k - b y - o n e - b r i c k p i e r s , which a r e con- s t r u c t e d v e r y a c c u r a t e l y w i t h c o m p l e t e l y f i l l e d j o i n t s ( F i g u r e 5 ) . A f t e r t h e p i e r h a s b e e n c o n s t r u c t e d w i t h a t o t a l o f 1 2 c o u r s e s , t h e t o p o f i t i s s t r a i g h t e n e d s o as t o b e p l a n e p a r a l l e l w i t h t h e s t e e l p l a t e , a n d h e r e a g a i n t h e C 100/330 i s u s e d . The f u l l h e i g h t o f t h e p i e r i s a p p r o x i m a t e l y 100 cm, b u t o b v i o u s l y i t c a n v a r y somewhat w i t h t h e d e g r e e o f b a k i n g o f t h e b r i c k s and h e n c e t h e i r s i z e . w e r e a l s o l a i d , a n d t h e s e were u s e d t o d e t e r m i n e t h e bond b e t w e e n t h e m o r t a r and b r i c k s . F i r s t , a b r i c k i s l a i d o u t and

t h e n a s t r i p o f t h i n g a u z e i s p l a c e d on t h e t o p s u r f a c e . M o r t a r i s t h e n a p p l i e d o v e r t h e g a u z e i n t h e manner o f r e g u l a r b r i c k l a y i n g , t h e n a n o t h e r b r i c k , a n d e v e r y t h i n g i s a d j u s t e d s o as t o h a v e a j o i n t t h i c k n e s s o f 1 5 mm. When t h e bond s t r e n g t h i s t o b e d e t e r m i n e d , t h e columns can b e p i c k e d up i n p i e c e s b e c a u s e t h e s t r i p s o f g a u z e p r e v e n t t h e m o r t a r f r o m a d h e r i n g t o t h e b r i c k b e n e a t h .

I n t h e w i n t e r masonry t e s t s , b r i c k l a y i n g a n d h a r d e n i n g were

c a r r i e d o u t i n t h r e e d i f f e r e n t rooms. One o f t h e s e was t h e l a b o r a t o r y i t s e l f (S) where t h e t e m p e r a t u r e d u r i n g t h e e n t i r e t e s t p e r i o d was k e p t a t a p p r o x i m a t e l y t 20°c, and t h e r e l a t i v e h u m i d i t y o f t h e atmos- p h e r e a v e r a g e d 30% ( w i t h q u i t e l a r g e f l u c t u a t i o n s ) . The o t h e r two rooms w e r e l a r g e c o l d rooms ( K 1 and K 2 ) , where t h e t e m p e r a t u r e c a n

be v a r i e d w i t h i n wide l i m i t s . I n K 1 , t h e t e m p e r a t u r e was k e p t c o n s t a n t a t - 1 5 O ~ , e x c e p t d u r i n g t h e a c t u a l masonry work, when i t was s e t a t a few d e g r e e s h i g h e r . B r i c k - l a y i n g was c a r r i e d o u t i n p e r i o d s o f a b o u t 30 m i n u t e s , and w i t h i n e a c h p e r i o d o n l y m o r t a r o f one c o m p o s i t i o n was

u s e d . The m o r t a r s w e r e k e p t a t a l l t i m e s i n t h e c o l d room, b u t s i n c e t h e m o r t a r b u c k e t was i n s u l a t e d w i t h m i n e r a l o i l a n d s t y r o f o a m ( s e e F i g u r e 5 ) , t h e t e m p e r a t u r e r e m a i n e d w e l l a b o v e t h e f r e e z i n g p o i n t . The t h i r d room, K2, was k e p t a t +6 t o 7 ' ~ d u r i n g t h e l a y i n g o f t h e b r i c k s , a f t e r w h i c h i t was l o w e r e d q u i t e s l o w l y t o - 1 5 ' ~ . F i n a l l y ,

a l l t h e t e s t p i e r s w e r e moved f r o m t h e c o l d room i n t o t h e l a b o r a t o r y , where t h e y r e m a i n e d f o r a c e r t a i n l e n g t h o f t i m e b e f o r e t e s t i n g .

F i g u r e 6 shows a l l t h e l a r g e and s m a l l p i e r s u s e d i n t h e main t e s t . E a r l i e r e x p e r i e n c e h a d shown t h a t i n s u c h t e s t s t h e r e i s l i t t l e p o i n t i n m e a s u r i n g t h e d e f o r m a t i o n s , a n d t h i s was t h e r e f o r e o m i t t e d . I n s t e a d , a v e r y a c c u r a t e c h e c k was k e p t as t h e t e s t s d e v e l o p e d , a n d a l l c r a c k i n g was n o t e d w i t h t h e c o r r e s - p o n d i n g l o a d . The p i e r s w e r e p l a c e d i n t h e m a c h i n e s o n t h e b o t t o m p l a t e o n w h i c h t h e y h a d b e e n c o n s t r u c t e d , and a c o r r e s p o n d i n g p l a t e w a s l a i d b e t w e e n t h e t o p o f t h e p i e r a n d t h e h e a d o f t h e m a c h i n e . The bond s t r e n g t h c o l u m n s , as m e n t i o n e d , were d i v i d e d up i n t o i n d i v i d u a l b r i c k s , a n d e a c h o f t h e s e b r i c k s t h e n h a d one l a y e r o f m o r t a r o n t h e i r l o w e r s i d e s . The p o s i t i o n o f t h e g a u z e was c h o s e n on t h e b a s i s o f t h e common e x p e r i e n c e t h a t t h e a d h e s i o n b e t w e e n t h e b r i c k a n d t h e m o r t a r i s n o r m a l l y p o o r e s t a l o n g t h e t o p o f t h e j o i n t . I n t h e t e s t s , f i r s t a c i r c l e 8 cm i n d i a m e t e r was c u t t h r o u g h t h e l a y e r o f m o r t a r and a s h o r t d i s t a n c e i n t o t h e b r i c k ( F i g u r e 8 ) . A h a r d m e t a l d r i l l was u s e d t o make t h e c i r c l e , o p e r a t e d i n a s l o w - s p e e d d r i l l clamped f i r m l y i n a s t a n d . The work was c a r r i e d o u t a s c a r e f u l l y as

p o s s i b l e , b u t t h e r e was no way o f a v o i d i n g t h e a p p l i c a t i o n o f c o n s i d - e r a b l e s t r e s s t o t h e m o r t a r d u r i n g t h e d r i l l i n g . I n d i v i d u a l s p e c i m e n s w e r e t h e r e f o r e d e t a c h e d , a n d a l t h o u g h t h i s i s n o t e n t i r e l y c o r r e c t , t h e y w e r e g i v e n a bond s t r e n g t h o f 0 . A c i r c u l a r a l u m i n i u m d i s k w i t h e x a c t l y t h e same a r e a as t h e c i r c l e ( 5 0 c m 2 ) , w a s t h e n s e c u r e d t o t h e undamaged t e s t p i e c e w i t h epoxy g l u e . The g l u e w a s a l l o w e d t o h a r d e n f o r one day i n t h e o r d i - n a r y l a b o r a t o r y a i r , a f t e r w h i c h i t h a d a h i g h e r t e n s i l e and a d h e s i v e

I n t h e t e s t , t h e d i s k was a t t a c h e d t o a small h y d r a u l i c t r a c t i o n a p p a r a t u s a n d a c o m p l e t e l y c e n t r i c t e n s i l e s t r e s s was a p p l i e d ( s e e F i g u r e 8 ) . The t e n s i l e f o r c e s were c a r e f u l l y n o t e d a l o n g w i t h t h e a p p e a r a n c e of t h e r u p t u r e , i . e . , w h e t h e r i t was p u r e l y a f a i l u r e i n b o n d , o r w h e t h e r p a r t o r a l l o f t h e b r e a k t o o k p l a c e i n t h e m o r t o r o r i n t h e b r i c k . The p u r p o s e o f t h e o r i e n t a t i o n t e s t s was t o c h e c k t h e t e s t

methods a n d a t t h e same t i m e t o g i v e c e r t a i n i n d i c a t i o n s o f what v a r i - a b l e f a c t o r s s h o u l d b e u s e d i n t h e p r i n c i p a l t e s t . Two t y p e s o f

b r i c k s w e r e u s e d , b o t h o f which a r e m a n u f a c t u r e d by S t r i n d e n T e g l v e r k , a n d w e r e s p e c i a l l y g r a d e d s o a s t o b e e x c e p t i o n a l l y u n i f o r m . One o f t h e t y p e s was a medium-fired and r e l a t i v e l y p o r o u s f a c a d e b r i c k w i t h a n a b s o r p t i o n c a p a c i t y o f a b o u t 25g/dm2, w h i l e t h e o t h e r was a h a r d b u r n t b r i c k from t h e same s o u r c e w i t h 10g/dm2 a b s o r p t i o n c a p a c i t y p e r m i n u t e . The a b s o r p t i o n c a p a c i t y i s d e f i n e d as t h e q u a n t i t y o f w a t e r a b s o r b e d by a d r y b r i c k p e r dm2 when t h e b r i c k i s h e l d f a c e down 1 cm u n d e r w a t e r f o r one m i n u t e . The b r i c k s were l a i d d r y , i n some c a s e s warm a t t e m p e r a t u r e s o f +20°c a n d + ~ O C , s o m e t i m e s c o l d a t t e m p e r a t u r e s o f - 1 5 O ~ . Only one t y p e o f m o r t a r was u s e d , namely K C 35/65, p r o p o r - t i o n e d and mixed a c c o r d i n g t o t h e r u l e s l a i d down i n NS 422A.

We s h a l l n o t g i v e t h e r e s u l t s o f t h e t e s t s i n d e t a i l , b u t some of t h e more i m p o r t a n t c o n c l u s i o n s may b e s t a t e d . I t was f o u n d , f o r

e x a m p l e , t h a t b o t h t y p e s o f b r i c k s u b j e c t e d t h e m o r t a r t o a v e r y t h o r o u g h a b s o r p t i o n i n a v e r y s h o r t t i m e ( i n t h e c a s e o f t h e medium- f i r e d b r i c k t h e a b s o r p t i o n was s o s t r o n g t h a t i t c o n s i d e r a b l y a f f e c t e d t h e bond s t r e n g t h v a l u e s and p r e s u m a b l y a l s o i n f l u e n c e d t h e s t r e n g t h o f t h e m a s o n r y ) . The p i e r s which w e r e s t o r e d i n t h e c o l d room were k e p t below f r e e z i n g 2 1 d a y s , a f t e r which t h e y w e r e l e f t t o c u r e i n t h e main l a b o r a t o r y f o r 7 d a y s . D u r i n g t h e f i r s t few d a y s i n t h e l a b o r a - t o r y , t h e m o r t a r thawed and became v e r y s o f t a g a i n . I n s p i t e of t h e s h o r t e f f e c t i v e h a r d e n i n g t i m e ( 6 % d a y s ) t h e f r o z e n p i e r s b o t h f r o m

K 1 a n d K2 a t t a i n e d 75% o f t h e masonry s t r e n g t h o f t h e p i e r s which h a d n o t b e e n f r o z e n and which h a d b e e n k e p t 28 d a y s i n t h e l a b o r a t o r y . T h i s means t h a t f r e e z i n g i n f a c t h a d r e s u l t e d i n a c o n s i d e r a b l e

a l l , however, was t h a t i t made no d i f f e r e n c e w h a t s o e v e r t o t h e masonry s t r e n g t h o r t o t h e a d h e s i v e s t r e n g t h w h e t h e r t h e b r i c k was w a r m o r c o l d . With wet b r i c k s , however, t h e s i t u a t i o n was e n t i r e l y d i f f e r e n t . The s u r f a c e began q u i t e q u i c k l y t o s h e d i c e ,

t h e b r i c k s " s w a m " i n t h e m o r t a r , a n d t h e l a y i n g t o o k a l m o s t t w i c e as l o n g as w i t h t h e d r y b r i c k s . A n o t h e r d i r e c t a n d o b v i o u s r e s u l t was t h a t some o f t h e m o r t a r w a s p r e s s e d o u t o f t h e j o i n t s , a n d t h e s e "wet" p i e r s were s e v e r a l cm s h o r t e r t h a n t h e d r y o n e s . With w a r m , wet b r i c k s t h e c o n d i t i o n s were s l i g h t l y b e t t e r t h a n w i t h c o l d , wet o n e s .

D u r i n g t e s t i n g , t h e t e m p e r a t u r e i n t h e m o r t a r j o i n t s was c h e c k e d by t h e r m o c o u p l e s . I n K 1 t h e t e m p e r a t u r e a t which t h e b r i c k s were l a i d was g O c , a n d w i t h w e t , c o l d b r i c k s t h i s was r e d u c e d t o 0 i n a b o u t 2% h o u r s . The c o r r e s p o n d i n g t i m e f o r d r y , c o l d b r i c k s was 3% h o u r s , a n d

f o r w a r m , wet b r i c k s a c o m p l e t e 7 h o u r s . The d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n wet and d r y b r i c k s i s t h a t t h e f o r m e r h a v e a h i g h e r c o e f f i c i e n t of t h e r m a l c o n d u c t i o n . B e c a u s e t h e r e s u l t s w e r e somewhat u n e x p e c t e d , h o w e v e r , t h i s was s u b - s e q u e n t l y c h e c k e d i n d e t a i l . I t was f o u n d t h a t t h e b r i c k s w h i c h a p p a r e n t l y a d s o r b e d w a t e r v e r y p o o r l y p r o b a b l y h a d t h e a b i l i t y t o remove a l a r g e p a r t o f t h e e x c e s s o f w a t e r f r o m t h e m o r t a r a f t e r b e i n g l a i d . I t s h o u l d b e o b v i o u s t h a t w h a t d r i e s f i r s t i s t h e o u t e r m o s t l a y e r o f t h e b r i c k s , i . e . , t h e p a r t s w h i c h a r e d i r e c t l y i n c o n t a c t w i t h t h e m o r t a r . What was r e m a r k a b l e was t h a t t h i s d i d n o t show up d u r i n g t h e o n e m i n u t e a b s o r p t i o n , a n d we must m e r e l y c o n c l u d e t h a t t h i s method o f t e s t i n g e v i d e n t l y h a s s e r i o u s w e a k n e s s e s . The r e s u l t s o f t h e p i e r t e s t s i n d i c a t e q u i t e d e f i n i t e l y t h a t w e t b r i c k s ( t o b e c r e d i t e d n o d o u b t w i t h a c e r t a i n s u c t i o n ) t h e r e f o r e g i v e g r e a t e r masonry s t r e n g t h t h a n d r y o n e s . T h i s h o l d s t r u e f o r a l l t y p e s o f m o r t a r , a n d i s e n t i r e l y i n d e p e n d e n t o f t h e method o f c u r i n g . Wet, w a r m b r i c k s , h o w e v e r , h a d somewhat l o w e r s t r e n g t h t h a n w e t , c o l d b r i c k s , e v e n t h o u g h t h e y w e r e e a s i e r a n d b e t t e r f o r l a y i n g p u r p o s e s . T h i s may b e d u e t o t h e f a c t t h a t i n t h i s c a s e t h e m o r t a r h a d b e g u n t o h a r d e n t o some e x t e n t b e f o r e i t f r o z e , a n d t h e r e f o r e may h a v e s u s t a i n e d l e s s damage. A s f a r as bond s t r e n g t h i s c o n c e r n e d , t h e most i m p o r t a n t r e s u l t

i s t h e f a c t t h a t s u c h low v a l u e s were o b t a i n e d f o r wet b r i c k s i n t h e c o l d room K 1 . T h i s must be due t o t h e f a c t t h a t t h e b r i c k s e x p e l l e d i c e , a n d what i s s u r p r i s i n g , i n f a c t , i s t h a t t h i s d i d n o t h a v e a g r e a t e r e f f e c t on t h e masonry s t r e n g t h . The most r e m a r k a b l e f e a t u r e , o t h e r w i s e , was t h e e x t r e m e improvement o b t a i n e d w i t h wet b r i c k s i n t h e p i e r s l a i d i n t h e c o n t r o l l a b o r a t o r y . However, we s h a l l n o t e n q u i r e f u r t h e r i n t o t h e s e r e s u l t s h e r e . We s h a l l d i s c u s s them e x t e n s i v e l y i n t h e f i n a l a p p r a i s a l l a t e r i n t h e a r t i c l e . 4 . M o r t a r t e s t s I n a l l S c a n d i n a v i a n c o u n t r i e s , when i t i s a q u e s t i o n o f d e t e r m i n - i n g t h e s t r e n g t h o f a masonry m o r t a r o r p l a s t e r , t h e s o - c a l l e d S c a n d i - n a v i a n t e s t method i s a p p l i e d . a c c e s s t o a b u n d a n t w a t e r i n o r d e r f o r t h e h a r d e n i n g p r o c e s s t o become c o m p l e t e . I n p r a c t i c e , b o t h w a l l j o i n t s a n d l a y e r s o f p l a s t e r h a v e a v e r y r e s t r i c t e d t h i c k n e s s . I n most c a s e s a l s o , t h e y a r e i n c o n t a c t w i t h a b r i c k o r a s u p p o r t i n g m a t e r i a l o f g r e a t e r o r l e s s e r a b s o r p t i v i t y , which t h e r e f o r e s u c k s o u t some o f t h e m o r t a r w a t e r d i r e c t l y a f t e r t h e m o r t a r h a s b e e n p l a c e d . The same t y p e s o f m o r t a r s w e r e u s e d a s i n t h e masonry i n v e s t i g a - t i o n s , i . e . , K C 50/50/610, KC 35/65/520 and K C 20/80/440. M i x i n g was c a r r i e d o u t i n a s t a n d a r d i z e d 4 l i t r e m i x e r o f t h e H o b a r t t y p e , and f o r e a c h t y p e o f m o r t a r a c o n s t a n t q u a n t i t y o f w a t e r was u s e d i n a l l b a t c h e s . By w a s h i n g a n d d r y i n g t h e b r i c k s d i r e c t l y a f t e r s t r i p p i n g , m o r e o v e r , t h e same b r i c k s c o u l d b e u s e d o v e r a n d o v e r a g a i n many t i m e s . I n method c t h e b r i c k , w i t h a l a y e r o f g a u z e , was l a i d d i r e c t l y a g a i n s t t h e e d g e o f t h e f o r m a n d t h e t o t a l q u a n t i t y o f w a t e r a b s o r b e d s h o u l d t h e n b e 35 g . Method d , h o w e v e r , g a v e v e r y c o n s t a n t r e s u l t s . We know, h o w e v e r , t h a t m o r t a r s which h a v e l o s t somewhere n e a r h a l f of t h e i r o r i g i n a l w a t e r c o n t e n t w i l l h a v e a c e r t a i n s t r e n g t h e v e n i f no h a r d e n i n g h a s t a k e n p l a c e . I t s h o u l d b e s u f f i c i e n t f o r small l o a d s , b u t c e r t a i n l y n o t f o r a v e r y h e a v i l y l o a d e d p i e c e o f masonry.
