An Annual Report of the Canadian Section is issued each year and this Report is, therefore, a summary of the activities of Canadian members of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering for the period June 1968 to December 1969.

It is published for the purpose of keeping Canadians informed of those soil mechanics investigations which are being conducted in their own country. In this way, it will assist in overcoming the natural handicap offered by the widespread geographical distribution of soil mechanics work in Canada.

The Report includes a list of publications by members of the Can ad i an Section. In addition, it includes a list of known thesis topics presently under study and a list of suggested research projects. It is hoped that these lists will develop into useful sources of information. A special effort has been made to reduce reports on routine work. It is probable, however, that some of the work noted was of a routine nature but was considered worth including because of possible general interest. Brevity in reporting the work has been attempted .

(a) Field studies of the relative density of granular materials using penetration tests, including the use of large-scale calibration tests in bins. Office

statistical studies of the variations in penetration resistance.

(b) Field and laboratory studies to assess possible earthquake effects on deltaic sands. Work includes undisturbed sand sampling, laboratory liquefaction tests, and comparisons with standard penetration and dynamic cone test results.

Canadian National Railways

An economical standardized method of reducing the differential heaving of existing railway track by application of granular salt has been developed. Average effectiveness of the treatment in all soils and climates is 70% for two years. Means of increasing and extending the effectiveness are under study.

The usefulness of petrographic examination is being evaluated for determination of the suitability of rock for use as railway ballast.

A co rnpa.riso n of the reliability of standard absorption, Los Angeles abrasion and sodium sulphate soundness tests in predicting the performance of rock as railway ballast is being made. Fo r this purpose samples of 10 rock types have been tested in the laboratory and corresponding ballast sections laid in a track for regular observation.

DepartITlent of Regional EconoITlic Expansion - PFRA

A joint research prograITlITle was carried out together with the Saskatchewan Research Council and the U. S.

Geological Survey on geophysical borehole logging. The prograITlme involved the testing of 16 holes by rn e a ns of radiation, temperature s pe c tr orne te r and electric logging to assess the usefulness of these rrie tho d s in finding variations and boundaries in bedrock and overburden Io r mation s .

Work is being carried out on stress -strain-time behaviour of r erno u ld e d cohesive soils using temperature controlled simple shear. Ontario Hydro - Research Division

A trial use of styrofoam insulations was made for a transformer pad foundation at Ear Falls in northwestern Ontario. A

3-inch layer of insulation was placed about 2 feet below the pad which was constructed at about ground level. Instrumentation was provided which consisted of thermocouple temperature measurements, heave measurements and frost depth measurements. No appreciable heaving 0 ccurred although temperatures did go slightly below freezing immediately below the styrofoam slab. In future installations a

thickness of 4 inches will be used.

A test installation consisting of concrete, wood and steel footings was placed at a sub -station site near Newmarket to measure frost adheave stresses. The test footings were about 12 inches in diameter and extended 4 feet below ground level. Each footing was anchored with a multi -helix anchor. The heaving forces were measured by use of a instrumented bolt which was fastened to the anchor extension rod which passed through a duct in the test footing.

Underground Cable Backfill Studies

A field study of the thermal properties of special cable backfill materials was continued. This consisted of hot-mix and

cold-mix asphalt mixtures and the use of special cooling procedures such as a porous plastic soaker pipe and special freon cooling duct. A simulated cable was used which consisted of a 3-inch pipe which is heated internally to provide the required thermal environment. The materials were placed around the pipe in a shallow trench.

Using the University's standard Swedish sampler, site investigations are being performed in areas of soft, normally consolidated deposits near Kingston. The information is being co-ordinated with the results from commercial investigations in the area. Samples are also being tested in the soil science laboratory as to mineralogical composition.

The construction and calibration of an apparatus for measurement of powder densities by hydrostatic weighing is completely achieved and at work.

A new study on porosity and density measurements is to be completed.

Department of Regional Economic Expansion - PFRA

(a) A laboratory testing programme was continued in the development of a standard direct shear method to determine the residual shear strengths of clay shales and overconsolidated clays. The residual shear strength characteristics of clay shales are being investigated to verify stability studies for major dams.

(b) Studies were started on the correlation of the optimum moisture content of a soil with its plastic limit.

is a majo r facto r to be consid ered in selecting strength paramete rs for Eastern Canadian clays, especially Leda clay. As a result of the cementation, the failure surface has three distinct regions for these normally consolidated soils. Present res earch on this topic is divided into three areas:

(a) A detailed comparison of the failure envelope based upon the full variety of strength tests (drained and undrained, stress -controlled or strain-controlled, simple shear, etc.) based upon one series of "homogeneous" blocks. (b) A detailed examination of slope stability

problems as a check upon field strength

conditions, combined with theoretical analyses as to the strain distribution in a slope with a work -softening material.

(c) An assessm.ent of the influence of sampling upon sample disturbance with particular reference to the amount of cementation which may be destroyed by standard tube samplers.

3. SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS INCLUDING PAVEMENTS Canadian National Railways

Prediction of ballast and s ubgrade conditions unde r railway track by analysis of a continuous profile of the loaded rail is being studied. For this purpose a 35-mile section of track has been

chosen. Subgrade and ballast conditions have been found at selected locations and a loaded rail profile will be produced by an electronic

recorder car.

Cox, J. B.

Trial roadway embankments 300 meters long are being built at two separate locations along the alignment of the Than Buri -Pak Tho highway across the deltaic plains of Thailand to determine stability and settlement characteristics of the proposed highway. The highway traverses recent marine clays.

A field investigation programme on frost action in soils beneath spillway was continued.

Insulated Roads

Long-term observations were continued on performance of road sections which incorporate semi-rigid foam plastics as insulation to attenuate frost penetration.

Frost Action on Small Footings

An experimental programme, involving several types of footings such as used for small unheated buildings and transmission towers, was continued. The 0bje ct of the programme is to 0bs er ve the depth of frost penetration, the amount of heave, and the pressure exe rted by frozen ground adhering to the perimeter at the footings.

Anchorage in Permafrost

Full-scale tests were continued on anchors in permafrost at two sites in Northern Manitoba.

Foundations in Permafrost

The performance of various types of foundation is being obs erved on a long -term basis at Inuvik, N. W. T.

Swelling Shale

An investigation was made into the swelling of shale due to biochemical processes in Ottawa. A heave of nearly four inches

in a basement floor in a period of 3 1/2 years has resulted from a complex biochemical process occurring in the underlying shale.

Consolidation of Sensitive Clays

Observations of settlements due to consolidation of

sensitive clay were continued at a number of locations. Sites include an instrumented test fill, road fills and buildings with bearing pressures

ranging from about one -half to two tirn e s the preconsolidation pressure. Supporting laboratory test programmes have been conducted on clays

Ontario Department of Highways

In 1965, the Ontario Department of Highways constructed a full-s cale experiment on Highway No. 10 north of Brampton. Thirty-four test sections are included and the main objective is to determine the load bearing equivalencies of five different types of road bases when laid in combination with asphaltic concrete surfacings and a sandy sub -base material on a light clay soil.

Ontario Hydro - Research Division Transmis sion Tower Foundations

A field testing programme was carried out on a transmission line in the Toronto area to investigate the possibility of using vertical grouted anchors to provide vertical uplift capacity for pad and pier footings. Anchors of varying depth and diameter were placed and tested in vertical uplift. Several drilling methods for placing the anchors were compared. A very high uplift capacity was found in the dense till soil. The method appears feasible and may result in appreciable savings by reducing the depth of excavation for conventional pad and pier foundations.

Instrumentation of Structures

The foundation instrumentation programme at the Lambton GS was continued. This consisted of pore pressure and

s ettl errie nt measurements at the coal pile, the bucket-wheel reclairner and a large transformer. The soil at this site is fairly compressible and very deep. The short-term and long-term behaviour of the

structures is being evaluated using the SEPOL (ICES) system of settlement analysis.

Instrumentation of a fill built across organic silts

in sub -zero temperatures gave an opportunity to evaluate instrumentation o

to temperatures as low as 40 below zero and to assess the effect of a frozen mat of organic material on the distribution of load on soft underlying sediments.

Placement of an instrumented fill on soft muskeg and organi c silts allowed comparison of laboratory and field d et e r rrii n a ti on of the permeability of these materials.
