Editorial

This issue will focus attention on the problem of information retrieval.

Everyone is aware of the so called "explosion" of information, indicating

an exponential growth, doubling in every ten years. In science, Price esti-

mates a doubling in 10 to 1 5 years, which is supported by the growth of peri-

odicals, which appear t o be doubling in every 1 3 years,

and

the number of

chemical abstracts which appear to be doubling in approximately 1 5 years.

It may be noted that Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory (1983

ed.) lists some 64,800 periodicals in 556 subject areas, and in 1982 Chemical

Abstracts cited 457,789 references. In the face of such staggering numbers

we can agree that the computer storage and retrieval of information has to

be viewed as our salvation

but is it?

When we conceived the idea to retrieve and publish in this journal a yearly

list of references relevant to the area of information covered by this journal,

we discovered that this was difficult to achieve because a computer search

based on a simple program retrieved many references that had no relevance

and omitted many that were important. This situation exists because most

authors and abstractors do not identify the key aspects of the published pa-

pers, the apparent objective being to highlight the paper, rather than identify

an item of new information on a specific subject. There is also the problem

with an interdisciplinary area such as that of durability of materials, where

the boundaries are not so well defined.

This discovery prompted us to develop a guide for keyword selection to

be followed by authors to aid in computer retrieval of the information. This

guide is presented in this issue and serves to index the references given. The

numbers assigned to the words are used in the list of references as a conve-

nience and are not intended to be used in place of the keywords, and it is

hoped that the numbers will aid the readers to select the references of inter-

est to them. For reasons given above, we are aware that all relevant refer-

ences were not retrieved by this search despite considerable refinement of

the computer program. We hope this will improve with time.

We invite all those concerned with research in this area and especially the

authors to consider the problem of information retrieval and to test the pro-

posed solution based on a selective guide of keywords. We invite your partic-

ipation to evolve a successful solution to the problem.

Where possible the title should contain one of the following three words; Durability, Deterioration, or Performance with time.
