F l u o r e s c e n c e i n t h e Rb, a n d Cs, molecules was i n d u c e d by e i f f e r e n t l a s e r s : ~ r + a n d ~ r + i o n l a s e r s a n d v a r i o u s dye l a s e r s . T h e f l u o r e s c e n c e s p e c t r a were r e c o r d e d a t high r e s o l u t i o n (5 t o 1 5 1 0 - ~ c m - ' ) by F o u r i e r t r a n s f o r m spec- t r o s c o p y b o t h i n t h e visible a n d i n t h e n e a r i n f r a r e d p a r t of t h e s p e c t r u m .
T h e f i n e a n a l y s i s of t h e s p e c t r a l e d t o t h e discovery o r t o t h e i m proved knowledge of m a n y e x c i t e d e l e c t r o n i c states. I n Cs, t h e f 0110 wing s t a t e s were c h a r a c t e r i z e d : A '2: a f t e r e x c i t a t i o n with t h e 1.09um ~ r ' l i n e , (2)
