Abstract

U, B, V photonetric observati'ons perforned in February 1977 aE the European Southern Observatory (62 cn Bochum telescope) show Èhat

for the star B2IVIe) IID 45677 some of the magnitudes and related color indices may vary by as much as 0.03 mag' over one oight, and

about 0.1 nag. fron night to night. The conclusion derived from our photometric run confirm those published by Feinstein et a1 (1976), nanely that I'A variation in V is alnost systematically accompanied

by a change in B-V but of opposite sign". Ue furÈher fiûd that a variation in V is well correlated with a similar change of the U-B

index : such a correlation existed in the data of Feinstein and

coworkers i a1Èhough it had not been reporied.

Our spectroscopic BaÈeria1, !hac uas obtained simultaneously çith the photometry mentioned above, consistg of 38 spectra thaÈ

cover the blue region at a dispersion of 20 A nn-r. Such an imPortant sample of spectrograus has not yeÈ been analysed in great detail for in!ensities, radial velocities, etc. I'le si11 only reporÈ here on striking variations tha! were detected in the profiles of the f ollowing lines : Hv, Eô, Ii'Ca II(H) and Mg I1 À 4481.

The hydrogen line profiles are conplex: Èhey corrsist nov of a broad and shallos absorption oi vhich is superinposed an emission

line broken on its violet side by a deeP and narrow absorption (P Cygni type). On each side of this absorption one observes two

distinct emission vings thaÈ will be referred to as the violet and

red wings. The intensity of the vioLet ving varied appreciably during the course of our observations : it reached a maximun (resP. niniuum) value when the conÈinuum leve1 of the stellar flux measured

via !he U, B, V filters reâched a ninimum (resp. naximum).

The profile of Mg II À 4481 is closely re1âÈed !o that of the hydrogen Lines. A deep and fairly narrôw absorption comPonent is surrounded by two emission wings : the variability of the violeÈ ving appears to be the saEe as for the Baluer lines.

If the light variations observed for HD 45677 are interPreted in Èerms of obscuration by circumsÈe11ar dust cloud s (Swi.ngs and

A11en, l97l; Coyne and Vrba,1916) it is 1ikely that ParÈ of the stellar UV and visible radiations will be back-scaÈtered inside the extended atmosphere surrounding the star. The excitation of all atons and ions present in the envelope çi11 be affected by such a Process : subsequent variations of Èhe Iine emissions and absorPÈions are

bouod to occur. It is exDected hovever that this back-scattered .*i"ai* çif:. hare a stronger influence on t;

moving Èosard the observer than on !haÈ of those star ia an opposite direction. Such a mechaniso

to a se1€ctive increase of the intensity of the relative to the red wings; at the saae time che

froq the earth si11 be fading.

A nore decailed, i.e. uore quantitative, analysis of our data is in progress and ritl be published later.

The circunste 11ar absorption due blended vith the violet emiss ion wing

virh it s maxinum iûtensity, the Ca Il longer vis ible on our spectre.
