réalisé, l’ITO et l’aluminium qui ont des niveaux de Fermi différents sont en contact. Un potentiel de diffusion dû à la différence de leurs travaux de sortie ( = 4,8 eV et = 4,3 eV) entraîne la migration des électrons de l’aluminium vers l’ITO.
Par ce mouvement de diffusion des électrons, la région de surface de l’ITO se charge négativement et celle de l'aluminium, positivement. Il se crée simultanément un champ électrique (de contact) dans le matériau organique s’opposant au transfert d’électrons par diffusion. La migration des électrons se produit jusqu’à ce que le potentiel de diffusion soit contrebalancé par le potentiel dérivant du champ électrique de contact, ce qui revient à dire que les niveaux de Fermi s’alignent (Figure 17a,b) [HAD00]. Ce potentiel interne de contact nommé (Vbi), résultant de la différence significative entre les travaux de sortie des électrodes, est responsable d’un seuil de potentiel qu’il faut appliquer pour que le passage du courant et de l’émission de lumière soient possibles. Vbi est égale, à la différence entre les travaux de sortie des électrodes [CAM96].
(2.20) Il faut cependant noter que c’est une approximation qui n'est pas générale ; elle est seulement valable en l’absence de charges, de dopants, de bipolarons ou de polarons, qui peuvent changer l'alignement des niveaux d’énergie et par suite la valeur de .

Une tension appliquée sur la structure permet de repositionner les bandes horizontalement (Figure 17c) c'est‐à‐dire compenser le potentiel de contact (Vbi). Cette tension appliquée dite "tension de bandes plates" (Vbp=Vbi). Pour une polarisation dans le sens direct inférieure à Vbp, le champ électrique présent au sein du matériau organique s’oppose au passage du courant. Il faut appliquer une tension supérieure à ce seuil, Vbp pour favoriser le transfert des charges ainsi que le passage des électrons dans la LUMO et le passage des trous dans la HOMO (Figure 17d).

hUne accumulation de charges aux interfaces, la formation d’un dipôle à l’interface ou une réaction chimique peuvent modifier le champ interne de telle sorte qu’il ne soit plus égal à la différence des fonctions de travail. Mais, quoiqu’il arrive, lorsque les travaux de sortie sont différents, un certain potentiel interne subsiste.
Lors du contact, des électrons sont transférés du semi‐conducteur vers le métal. Par conséquent, une région dépeuplée de donneurs ionisés de largeur W est formée pour maintenir la neutralité électrique ; les donneurs ionisés positivement de la couche organique dépeuplée sont équilibrés par la formation d’une zone de charge négative dans le métal. W est donnée par la relation :
, où ND est la concentration des donneurs (2.22)
Une approximation suppose qu’un champ électrique est seulement présent dans la région dépeuplée et nul ailleurs. Ainsi pour les structures métal/semi‐conducteur/métal suffisamment épaisses (
€
d〉〉W , étant l'épaisseur du semi‐conducteur), le champ électrique est présent seulement dans les régions près des interfaces. Si la distance entre les deux électrodes est plus petite, par exemple une épaisseur de couche organique de l'ordre de la somme des largeurs des deux régions dépeuplées, le champ électrique sera présent à travers la structure entière. Une petite concentration d’impuretés laissées soit lors de la synthèse des polymères soit lors de la fabrication des composants, pourrait jouer le rôle d’un dopant. Cependant, des mesures de photoémission sur le polyfluorène [GRE00] n'ont mis en évidence aucune déformation de bandes dans le polymère ni des effets de charge d’espace pour des épaisseurs de l’ordre de 110 à160 nm : ceci implique que la largeur de la zone dépeuplée est de l’ordre du micromètre [GRE00, KUG00]. Puisque les matériaux organiques peuvent être synthétisés avec une grande pureté, il est plus approprié d’utiliser la notion de densité de pièges plutôt que celle d’impuretés ionisées pour décrire les charges d’espaces [GRE95]. Davids et al. [DAV95] ont montré que dans le poly (2‐ méthoxy,5‐(2'‐éthyl‐héxyloxy)‐1,4 phénylène vinylène (MEH‐PPV), avec une densité de pièges de l'ordre de 1016 cm‐3 placée à ± 0,6eV du milieu de la bande interdite, les structures des
diodes sont entièrement dépeuplées lorsqu’elles sont polarisées en inverse et jusqu’à de faibles polarisations directes (avant qu’une injection significative se produise). Ce travail
théorique ensuite a été confirmé par des mesures d'impédance sur des composants similaires [CAM95]. Le champ électrique est alors uniforme ; sa norme
€
F= V /d est liée à la superposition de la tension appliquée et de la tension interne due à la différence de travaux de sortie des électrodes.
Conclusion
Dans ce chapitre, nous avons présenté les matériaux semi‐conducteurs organiques et expliqué leurs propriétés de conduction. Le fonctionnement des OLEDs et des OPVs a ensuite été discuté, ainsi que les facteurs principaux de leur amélioration. Nous avons montré l’importance des effets d'interface qui influencent fortement la tension de bandes plates, paramètre fondamental pour améliorer le fonctionnement et étudier les niveaux d’énergie dans ces composants.
La spectroscopie d'électro‐absorption a été identifiée et construite au sein de notre laboratoire afin de pouvoir étudier ces composants.
L’électro‐absorption est une spectroscopie optique utilisée en particulier pour étudier les structures MIM [CAM96]. C’est une technique non invasive, qui permet une étude directe des propriétés optiques et électriques des dispositifs finis en particulier. Dans cette thèse, elle est utilisée pour étudier le champ électrique interne et le champ de bandes plates dans une variété de structures OLED et OPV.
La théorie de base de l'électro‐absorption et son utilisation pour mesurer dans des composants organiques sont décrites dans le chapitre 3, ainsi que l'outil principal de recherche de cette thèse: le spectromètre d'électro‐absorption.
