Quelle est la fréquence du trouble bipolaire?

Le taux de prévalence du trouble bipolaire est faible dans la population; il est compris entre zéro et 2,1 % environ chez les adolescents, et le taux pour les garçons et les filles sont similaires (Merikangas et coll., 2009). Globalement, le taux pour toutes les personnes quel que soit leur âge est d’environ 3 ou 4 % (Merikangas et coll., 2007). Le taux inférieur des adolescents peut s’expliquer soit parce que le trouble bipolaire ne se produit pas aussi souvent chez eux, soit parce qu’il est difficile de diagnostiquer ce trouble avec précision tant que plusieurs cycles d’un comportement symptomatique n’ont pas été observés (CYMHIN-MAD, 2010).
