The mine rescue training program, the expenses of which are paid entirely hy the operators of the under-ground mines, was continued throughout 1974 under the supervision of the Inspection of Mines Service of the Department of Natural Resources.

Rescue teams were called on a few occasions to fight small fires underground and to check the quality of the air in the underground work ings alter the fire was extin-guished.

Le Concours provincial de sauvetage minier, auquel quatre équipes ont participé, eut lieu à Val-d'Or le 25 mai 1974. L'équipe des Mines Patino (Québec) limitée remporta les honneurs du concours et s'appropria le trophée de sauvetage minier.
The provincial mine rescue competition in which four teams participated, was held in Val-d'Or on May 25, 1974. The team of Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited won the content and was awarded the trophy.

ACCIDENTS
Au cours de l'année 1974, le ministère des Richesses naturelles a reçu des rapports de 5 787 accidents sur-venus dans les lieux placés sous sa juridiction, compa-rativement à 5 258 en 1973. Ces rapports comprennent 23 accidents mortels, I 413 accidents compensables et 4 351 accidents non compensables, comparé à 19 acci-dents mortels, 1 187 acciacci-dents compensables et 4 052 accidents non compensables en 1973.
Le taux des accidents compensables par million d'hommes-heures travaillées a été de 25.5 en 1974 com-paré à 22.6 en 1973.
Malgré le travail de prévention des accidents qui fut continué dans toute la province, le nombre des acci-dents compensables, qui avait connu une hausse de 1 1%
en 1973 par rapport à 1972 a connu une nouvelle hausse d'environ 13% en 1974 par rapport à 1973. Des efforts de prévention encore plus grands s'imposent auprès des employeurs et des employés de l'industrie minière afin de renverser la tendance ascendante de la fréquence des accidents.
Dans ce domaine, les Mines Lac Mattagami Limi-tée se sont vues décerner le trophée régional John T.
Ryan pour avoir obtenu la fréquence d'accidents la plus basse en 1974, parmi les mines métallifères éligibles du Québec et des Provinces Maritimes, soit 10.25 acci-dents par million d'hommes-heures.
Nombre et taux d'accidents
Les tableaux 40, 41 et 42 donnent le nombre et le taux d'accidents survenus dans les mines et carrières sous la juridiction du service de l'Inspection des Mines.
Le nombre d'heures de travail considérées dans le cal-cul des taux d'accidents (total de 56.3 millions d'heu-res) diffère de celui de l'ensemble de l'industrie minière (70.6 million d'heures, tab. 39) parce que la juridiction du service de l'Inspection des Mines ne s'étend pas aux fonderies de la Compagnie Fer et Titane du Québec, aux affineries de Canadian Electrolytic Zinc et de Cana-dian Copper Refiners, ni aux installations protuaires de Sept-11es, Pointe-Noire et Port-Cartier.
ACCIDENTS
During the year 1974, the Department of Natural Resources received 5 787 reports on accidents that oc-curred at locations under its jurisdiction, compared to 5 258 in 1973. These reports include 23 fatal accidents, 1 413 compensable accidents, and 4 351 non -compen-sable accidents, compared to 19 fatal accidents, 1 187 compensable accidents, and 4 052 non -compensable accidents in 1973.
The rate of compensable accidents per million man-hours worked was 25.5 in 1974, compared to 22.6 in 1973.
In spite of the accident prevention work that was continued throughout the Province, the rate of com-pensable accidents, which had increased by 1 1% in 1973, again increased by about 13%, in 1974. Greater efforts of accident prevention rest with the employers and em-ployees of the mining industry in order to reverse the present trend of increasing accident frequencies.
In this field, Mattagami Lake Mines Limited was presented the regional John T. Ryan trophy for having the lowest accident frequency rate among the eligible metalliferous mines of Québec and the Maritime Pro-vinces in 1974. This frequency was 10.25 accidents per million man-hours.
Number and rate of accidents
Tables 40, 41 and 42 show the number of accidents and the accident rate in the mines and quarries which conte under the jurisdiction of the Mines Inspection Services. The number of hours of work used in the cal-culation of the accident rate (56.3 million hours) dif-fers from the total for the mining industry (70.6 million hours, Tub. 39) because the jurisdiction of the Mines Inspection Service does not cuver the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation smelter, the refineries of Cana-dian Electrolytic Zinc and of CanaCana-dian Copper Refiners or the harbour installations at Pointe-Noire, Sept-11es, and Port-Cartier.
