Une cellule oedométrique de grand diamètre permettant d’effectuer des essais de compression uniaxiale sur des assemblages de particules de roche a été développée dans le cadre de ce projet. Une série d’équations permettant d’évaluer les forces de frottement générées à l’interface entre les parois de celle-ci et les grains de l’échantillon a été présenté. Une série d’essais de compression uniaxiale sur des échantillons de particules de roche provenant du site de La Romaine 2 a permis de confirmer la validité de ces équations. La compressibilité à court terme d’échantillons de particules de roche a ensuite été évaluée à l’aide de la fonction puissance et caractérisée par la pente de la droite contrainte- déformation en échelles logarithmiques. Il a été observé que la relation contrainte- déformation des échantillons testés se divise en deux phases. La première est caractérisée par le réarrangement des particules et la seconde est caractérisée par le broyage de celles-ci. La compressibilité à court terme est influencée par la distribution granulométrique et dans une moindre mesure, par la masse volumique initiale et la teneur en eau. Les essais réalisés ont également démontré que, pour les échantillons testés, la taille des particules a peu d’influence sur la compressibilité à court terme. Une étude détaillée de la résistance à la rupture des grains individuels soumis à un essai de broyage permettrait de préciser l’influence de la taille des particules sur la compressibilité. Elle permettrait également d’établir un parallèle entre la compressibilité d’assemblages de particules de roche et celle de l’enrochement, qui est habituellement composé de bloc rocheux de diamètres importants.
En plus de la compressibilité à court terme, le phénomène de fluage a également été étudié. Il en ressort que les indices de fluage, Cε,t, calculés peuvent être reliés à l’indice de
compressibilité, Cε,σ, tel que proposé par Mesri et Verdhanabhuti (2009). Les ratios
Cε,t/Cε,σ, obtenus sont d’environ 0,02 dans le cas des échantillons sec et d’environ 0,03 pour
les échantillons humides et ceux saturés. Ces valeurs sont du même ordre que les résultats présentés par Mesri et Verdhanabhuti (2009) et Oldecop et Alonso (2007). Ainsi, en dérivant la fonction puissance caractérisant la relation contrainte-déformation en fonction

du logarithme de la contrainte appliquée, il est possible d’évaluer l’indice de fluage en tout point de la courbe contrainte-déformation.
L’analyse des distributions granulométriques initiales et finales des essais réalisés a permis de déterminer un indice de broyage pour ces essais. Il en ressort que les déformations totales encourues durant l’essai sont étroitement reliées à l’indice de broyage calculé. La relation entre le broyage et la compressibilité confirme donc que le broyage des particules est un phénomène influençant fortement la compressibilité des assemblages de particules de roche.
En terminant, ce projet a permis d’approfondir les connaissances disponibles sur la compressibilité des assemblages de particules de roche. L’appareillage développé dans le cadre de cette maîtrise s’avère efficace dans l’étude de ce type de matériau et peut être utilisé afin de poursuivre l’étude de la compressibilité des assemblages de particules de roche. Par exemple, quelques ajouts à ce montage lui permettraient d’effectuer des essais œdométriques tout en contrôlant l’humidité relative présente dans la cellule oedométrique. L’étude de l’influence de l’humidité relative sur la compressibilité pourrait alors être entreprise. Différents matériaux pourraient également être utilisés afin d’évaluer l’effet de la minéralogie.
