Preface

The present Directory of Electronic Networks in Africa has been prepared

the PADISIIDRC Capacity Building for Electronic Networking in Africa (CABECA) project.

CABECA aims to build the necessary network supportive infrastructure to assist the evolvement of sustainable national networks in Africa. The availability of information on connectivity in Africa is one of the priorities in the CABECA plan. The needfor information on connectivity for regular network users, planners, system operators, national network managers both in Africa and elsewhere, was of concern both to IDRC and PADIS since the beginning of low cost networking projects in 1989. Several national networks were setup during the last five years which support over lO,()(}(} users in the region.

There are no indigenous information resources on connectivity which can be updated locally in the Africa region on a day to day basis on different type of networks. Most available information on connectivity is inadequate, inaccurate and not up to date.

Local linkage information covering network cost, usage policy, telecommunication infrastructure, technology (protocol) andplansfor network upgrading is very useful both for network planners and global users. The current directory is an attempt towards providing useful information to regular users. During the last two years, system operators in Africa have been bombarded with queries on connectivity in their countries and other countries in Africa. Up to date infonnation on local connectivity in Africa will be an invaluable resource to reduce this lack ofinformation and bring about regional cooperation both in networks and otherjoint projects.

Development of all forms of project that help African countries can be launched if

users know the answers to such questions "where to connect", "at what cost" and "through whom". It is with this and other benefits in mind that CABECA is making available this directory. This printed version ofthe directory is an "evaluation copy "for discussion at the Regional Symposium on Telematics for Development in Africa. It is hopedthat the Symposium will provide guidelines that can be follwed afterwards on dissemination and collection of connectivity data.

A comprehensive output of the data base will be dissimentated continuously through worldwide networks including the Internet.

FldoNet:

FidoNet is a Point to point and store and forward e-mail network of users linked mainly through public dial up lines. Fido software consists of off-line readers and mailers. Fido has about 30000 public node world wide.

Cost affectiveness easy implementation using personal computer and its reliability over poor telephone lines made FidoNet attractive to African countries. Services available on FidoNet include E-mail file transfer BBS and echos (conferencel.

UUCP is a store and forward (batch processing) environment formed by a set of tools (programs and related files) for file transfer and ramote execution of programs. The name UUCP stands for Unix to Unix CoPy.

Though it was developed for transfer of files and messages between unix machines, there are variety of implementations for unix and non-unix system. UUCP is available on personal computers.

UUCP was best exploited using X.25 networks. Dial up links are also available. Most French speaking African countries utilize both dial up and X.25 UUCP links on Unix work stations. A PC version of UUCP implemented in Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Botswana. UUCP is known for its usenet conferences in addition to mail, file transfer and other batch services.

Healthnet:

Healthnet is a link using Fido technology in combination with tools for connection to Low Earth Orbit satellites. Operated by satelLife Healthnet assist medical professional to link to each other and the Internet via ground station that track Micro-satellites using the packet radio technology. Healthnet services include document deliveryI e-mailand arrangements to access to medical literature by any other means. It isrestricted to the health community.

Internet:

Internet is a global network of powerful work stations connected to each other via high speed leased lines and a network of networks connected via gateways. It is the world largest inter-network, connecting thousand of networks world wide.

Using the "TCP/IP" protocol the Internet network provide three main services: TELNET (standard Internet terminal emulation protocol) for remote log in, FTP (File Transfer Protocol)- for file transfer, SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol> for electronic mail. and other smaller services (date, time, system status and Internet directory).

Over 400 hundred tools based on the above three services are available to users including mforrnatlonretrlaval services such as Gopher and World Wide Web and directory and indexing tools such as Archie, WHOIS and X.500.

The interconnection technology to internet varies widely. Schools and campuses usually employ Local Area Networks (LANol which are connected through Ethernet or token rings which in turn connected to Internet.

Some of the Internet networks use X.25 under TCP/IP while others employ, mobile packet radios, dial up, T 1 Microwave links or leased lines.

SLIP (Serial link IP) is an Internet protocol used to run IP over serial lines such as telephone circuits. SLIP link using dial up line involves high cost for user making cross country calls. Most Internet services can be available under SLIP link.
