T h i s p a p e r w a s p r e s e n t e d a t a canadian Arrny Buitt-up Roofing serninar held in ottawa on october zlth and, z6th, 196I. Thd serninar was organized by the Asphalt Roofing Technical Gornmittee of the canadian Asphalt Roofing Industry, with participation also by the canadian Rsof,ing contractorsr Association. The paper was prepared as an i'ertroductory talk to define in a general way the whole roofing field and infroduce subjects discussed aL greater length and in d e t a i l b y o t h e r s .

ROOF DESIGN

A roof is the top covering of a buirding, and basically rnay b e c o n s i d e r e d t o c o n s i s t o f t w o units: a structural roof deck, and a roofing systern that covers the deck to keep out the elernents. It rnay be further broken down into five component parts:

(I) The ceiling or part of the roof visible from inside the building. In rnany cases it rnay be the underside of the roof deck, but often i t c o n s i s t s o f s e p a r a t e construction to conceal mechanical services. It rnay also in sorne designs carry the insulation, in which case the space between it and the roof frarne rnay be ventilated.

(Zl The roof deck placed on the structural frarning of the buitding to carry the load of the roof construction and other Ioads that rnay be applied to it.

(3) A foundation layer which is sornetirnes necessary to provide a suitable surface on which to lay roofing and,/or to produce a suitable p i t c h o r s l o p e o n t h e roof for drainage purposes.

Up to World War I I two types of deck predorninated - wood a n d c a s t - i n - p l a c e c o n c r e t e . T h e l a r g e a r n o u n t o f b u i l d i n g a f t e r t h e W a r a n d t h e t r e n d t o w a r d o n e - s t o r y b u i l d i n g s g r e a t l y i n c r e a s e d t h e r o o f a n d roofing rnarket, however, and stirnulated the developrnent of an increasing nurnber of different roof decks. T h e r o o f c o v e r i n g i s p r o b a b l y t h e most irnportant elernent in a b u i l d i n g . I t p r o t e c t s t h e s t r u c t u r e i t s e l . f a n d p r o v i d e s for the comfort o f t h e b u i l d i n g o c c u p a n t s a s well as the protecbion of valuable property. At the sarne tirne it rnust withstand a wide variety of clirnatic conditiorrs -w i n d , r a i n , h a i l , s n o -w , i c e , extrernes internperature, a n d a n y c o r n b i r r . a t i o n of these elemefrts.

R O O F I N G

W a t e r p r o o f i n g i s t h e r n o s t i r n p o r t a n t p a r t of the roofing cover. I t p r e v e n t s w a t e r f r o m e n t e r i n g i n t o the roof construction, but cannot p e r f o r m p r o p e r l y unless it is considered in relation to all the other c o m P o n e n t p a r t s o f t h e r o o f . While there is an arnazing variety of roof c o v e r i n g s a v a i l a b l e , t h e r e a r e two main groups:

( l ) r n u l t i p l e u n i t r o o f c o v e r i n g s , ( ? l s i n g l e u n i t r o o f c o v e r i n g s .

Multiple unit roof coverings such as shingles and tile depend l a r g e l y u p o n t h e i r w a t e r s h e d d i n g qualities, and the degree of effectiveness g e n e r a l l y d e p e n d s o n t h e s l o p e of the roof and the area of each unit

e x p o s e d t o t h e w e a t h e r .

Single unit roof coverings rnay also be cornposed of a nurnber o f u n i t s , b u t t h e f i n i s h e d r o o f i n g is a single-unit, flexible, waterproofed, custorrr-built rnernbrane that depends on its waterproofing qualities to k e e p o u t t h e w a t e r t h a t collects before it drains slowly to drainage otrtleLs. T h i s i s t h e b u i l t - u p r o o f i n g ( 8 . U. R. ) that is the rnain consideration of t h i s s e r n i n a r , - s o c a l l e d b e c a u s e it consists of plies or layers of roofing f e l t b o n d e d t o g e t h e r o n site with biturnen, with or without a protective s u r f a c e c o a t i n g t o g i v e i t i n c r e a s e d resistance and reduce the harrnful e f f e c t s o f s u n l i g h t o n t h e r n a t e r i a l s . T h i s s e r n i n a r w i l l c o n f i n e i t s e l f to hot-application built-up roofing in which hot biturnen is used to cernent t h e f e l t s .

T h e r e i s a l a c k o f a g r e e m e n t b e t w e e n a r c h i t e c t s , b u i l d e r s , r o o f i n g c o n t r a c t o r s , a n d p r o p e r t y o w n e r s , a s w e l l a s b e t w e e n c o u n t r i e s on roofing terrninology. This paper atternpts to clarify and arnplify the definitions of biturninous rnaterials agreed to by the Asphalt Roofing Technical Cornrnittee. (See Appendix A, Glossary of Roofing Terrns. )

Biturnen is a generic terrn describing any native mixture of heavy hydrocarbons in viscous or solid forrn, and in the roofing industry r n a y b e u s e d t o i n d i c a t e e i t h e r a s p h a l t o r c o a l - t a r p i t c h . I n t h e s o l i d

dtate these rnaterials appear alike, but the characteristics are sornewhat different.

Most of the asphalt used in Canada as an irnpregnating and waterproofing agent in asphalt roofing products and built-up roofing is the residue of petroleum Cistillation, with solne refinernent to achieve desirable properties and a range of softening points. Asphalt in its natural state is also found in sorne parts of the world in large solid deposits called l a k e s .

Coal-tar pitch is a bittrrninous rnaterial produced by distilling c r u d e t a r r e s i d u e d e r i v e d f r o r n t h e c o k i n g o f c o a l . I t i s c o n s i d e r e d t o h a v e e x c e l l e n t s e l f - h e a l i n g p r o p e r t i e s , b u t c a n o n l y b e u s e d o n v e r y l o w slopes frorn dead flat to approxirnately I in. per foot. Low rnelt point asphalts are used on lower slopes, and higher rnelt point asphalts can be used on rnuch steeper slopes, and consequently asphalt has a rnuch wider range of application.

When biturnen is heated for use in constructing a built-up r o o f , i t i s o f t e n r e f e r r e d t o a s h o t - s t u f f . P r o p e r h e a t i n g i s e x t r e r n e l y i r n p o r t a n t , s i n c e o v e r h e a t i n g c a n c o r n p l e t e l y d e s t r o y t h e d e s i r a b l e properties obtained by rigid rnanufacturing control. Proper adhesion

is achieved with coal-tar pitch at application ternperatures ranging frorn 3 2 5 t o 3 7 5 " F a n d w i t h a s p h a l t f r o r n 4 0 0 t o 4 3 0 ' F . T h e r n a t e r i a l s s h o u l d n e v e r b e h e a t e d b e y o n d 4 0 0 " F f o r p i t c h a n d 4 5 0 " F f o r a s p h a l t . Be1ow the rninirnurn stated the biturnen loses its workability and the cernenting action is reduced. Above the rnaxirnums the rnaterial loses valuable oils to the surrounding air, and also tends to form only a thin filrn which cannot give adequate cernenting action.

Asphalt saturated

f e l t s a r e u s e d w i t h asphalt, and tarred felts with coal-tar pitch to build u p w a t e r p r o o f i n g r n e r n b r a n e s.

C o n s i d e r i n g t h e r n o r e c o r r r r n c n rag felts, the standard rnaterial i s a N o . l 5 f e l t , q u i t e f r e q u e n t r y r e f e r r e d t o

" s r 5 p o u n d o r l 5 p o u n d -t y p e f e l -t . A l 5 - 1 b f e l -t i s u s u a l l y a s s u r n e d -t o weigh l5Ib per 100 sq f-t c o n s i s t i n g o t 6 l b p e r 1 0 0 s q f t o f f e l t s a t u r a t e d with 9 lb per 100 sq ft o f s a t u r a n t . C a n a d i a n S t a n d a r d s A s s o c i a t i o n specification sets a rninirnurn w e i g h t o f . I ? . 2 I b p e r s q u a r e , t h a t i s p e r 1 0 0 sq ft for No. l5 or l5 pound_ type saturated felt and the rninirnurn felt and saturant weight are also lower t h a n t h e 6 a n d 9 ( a c t u a i l y 5 . i a n d Z . l ) .

s a t u r a t e d r o o f i n g f e l t s a r e sold in rolrs, usually 36-in. wide, with guide lines rnarked on the surface to aid the applicator in obtaining t h e p r o p e r a r n o u n t of lapping. Sorne roofing felts are perforated with u n i f o r r n l y s p a c e d s r n a l l p i n holes, which are considered to allow trapped air to escape during laying, and biturnen to enter to forrn a weII_

bonded rnernbrane.

S a t u r a t e d f e l t s a r e n o t w a t e r p r o o f and will absorb rncisture; i n a b u i l t - u p r o o f i n g the waterproofing properties of the rnernbrane depend on the existence of continuous fikns of biturnen beLween the layers or plies of felt' It is the function of the felts to stabilize and prevent ruprure or flow of the biturninous filrns and generally to strengthen the roof covering.

A c o a t e d f e l t i s p r o d u c e d by the asphalt roofing rnanufacturers by coating the saturated. felt on one or both sides with a hard asphalt; a r n i n e r a l - s u r f a c e d f e l t i s p r o d u c e d by ernbedding rnineral granules on a c o a t e d s i d e , o r i n the case of selvage roofing by ernbedding granures on p a r t o f the width of the sheet. The selvage or selvage eage is ttrat part o f t h e s h e e t w i t h o u t rnineral surfacing. T h e s u r f a c i n g r n a t e r i a l a c t s a s a p r o t e c t i v e d r e s s i n g t o l i r n i t t h e d e s t r u c t i v e a c t i o n o f t h e s u n r s r a y s ( p a r t i c u l a r l y t h e u l t r a -violet) on the biturnen, to keep the felts and underlying structure cooler i n s u n n y w e a t h e r b y r e f l e c t i o n o f s u n r a y h e a t , a n d t o p r o v i d e w e i g h t t o p r e v e n t t h e f e l t s f r o r n l i f t i n g i n h i g h w i n d s . T h e g r a v e l a l s o t e n d s t o

stop the flow of biturnen by Rroviding a large nrrrnber of obstacles across any slope that rnay exist. Specified sizing is essential for corn,plete c o v e r a g e . I f g r a v e l i s t o o l a r g e , g a p s w i l l r e s u l t b e t w e e n g r a v e l u n i t s , and if too srnall rnay be easily dislodged and blown off.

D o u b l e p o u r o r d o u b l e g r a v e l l e d r o o f s a r e d e s i r a b l e o n l o w e r p i t c h e d r o o f s , w h e r e t h e s e a r e d e s i g n e d f o r p o n d i n g o r w h e r e w a t e r i s Iikely to pond even though it was not designed for it. Approxirnately 200 pounds of gravel is ernbedded in a top pour of about 50 pounds of b i t u r n e n p e r s q u a r e ; l a t e r t h e o p e r a t i o n i s r e p e a t e d w i t h 3 0 0 p o u n d s o f g r a v e l i n 7 5 p o u n d s p e r s q u a r e o f b i t u r n e n o n a s e c o n d p o u r . T h i s g i v e s a d d e d p r o t e c t i o n a g a i n s t s t a n d i n g w a t e r a n d r n e l t i n g s n o w a n d i c e . I t i s a l s o p o s s i b l e t o p l a c e t h e s e c o n d p o u r a f t e r a l l o t h e r t r a d e s h a v e f i n i s h e d t h e i r w o r k o v e r t h e r o o f , a t w h i c h t i m e a c h e c k c a n b e r n a d e f o r p o s s i b l e d a r n a g e d u r i n g c o n s t r u c t i o n .

It is very irnportant that roofing has sufficient slope to avoid standing pools of water. The cornbined attack of water or ice and sunshine on the rnernbrane is a rnuch greater ihazard. than either elernent alone, and i t i s b e l i e v e d t h a t d e t e r i o r a t i o n i s a c c e l e r a t e d a c c o r d i n g l y . T h e w e t a n d d r y c y c l i n g a c t i o n i s p a r t i c u l a r l y h a r d o n t h e r n e r n b r a n e . o v e r I i n . a n d u p to 3 in. per ft, the steep or higher melt point asphalts a r e u s e d ' I t i s n o t c o n s i d e r e d good practice to use asphalt gravel surfaced r o o f s o n s l o p e s in excess of 3 in" per ft because the surfacing has a

tendency to slide or be blown off the roof.

Careful consideration in design and application rnust be given t o i n t e r r u p t i o n s i n the roof surface at pirapets, penthouses, vent pipes, chirnneys and drains" On a flat roof the principle in rnaking a built-up roof is to lay down a continuous mernbrane conforrning to tlie roof deck surface and sealing all angles forrned by the roof deck with projecting surfaces' The rnernbrane is turned up io forrn a skirting or base flashing o n t h e v e r t i c a l surfaces so that it forrns a large watertight tray. The only outlets frorn this tray are the roof drains and scuppers to dispose of w a t e r ' W h e r e i t i s n e c e s s a r y to bend the felts up to rnake base flashings there is danger of weakening or actually breaking the felts if sharp right angle bends are rnade. It is difficult to achieve a right angle bend, and w h e n o n e i s a t t e r n p t e d a void usually results at the bend where air is

trapped, so that the felts are left unsupported and subject to later darnage. F o r t h e s e r e a s o n s it is necessary to provide support in the forrn of a c a n t s t r i p o f w o o d , insulation or mortar (Figs. 4 and Z).

I f b u i l d i n g s p a c e is so valuable that such equiprnent must be placed on the roof, it is extrernely irnportant that proper structural platforrns are detailed for the equiprnent to stand on. These platforrns should be supported on round pipe colurnns, since it is rnuch easier to flash around a round colurnn than around an H-colurnn. The platforrn should also be high enough above t h e r o o f f o r r o o f i n g t o b e p r o p e r l y i n s t a l l e d . I n o t h e r c a s e s t h e w r i n k l e s are so large that there is a loss of gravel a n d b i t u m e n f r o m t h e top so that serious deterioration takes place.
