THE
THEORY
OFRAMAN EFFECT
INCRYSTALS (1) (2)
By JOSEPH L. BIRMAN,
Physics Department,
New YorkUniversity,
NewYork,
U. S. A.Résumé.
rayonnement HER
On
peut employer
pourHE
excitoniques.
On utilise pourHL l’approximation harmonique. Au
totalH =
HR + HL
+HE + HER + HEL.
Les
opérateurs
s’écrivent sous forme de secondequantification.
Par des transformations
canoniques convenables,
on élimine le termed’interaction,
dans l’ordre leplus
bas. L’hamiltonien restantpeut
etHER
sont dumême
ordre,
seront discutées.On exposera d’autres
applications
de cetteméthode ;
parexemple
la diffusion Raman pardipôle magnétique
serasuggérée
comme nouveauphénomène
dans les cristauxioniques
à ions lourds.Abstract. - A theoretical discussion of the
theory
of Ramanscattering by phonons
incrystals
is
given.
The hamiltonian is taken as H =H0
+H1
whereH0
is: the hamiltonian of thephotons, HR ; plus
the hamiltonian of thephonons, HL ; plus
the electron hamiltonianHE.
The inter- action term isH1,
which is the sum of electron-radiation hamiltonianHER, plus
the electron- lattice hamiltonianHEL.
Either oneparticle
Bloch basicstates,
or exciton basic states can be used forHE ;
the harmonicapproximation
is used forHL.
Thus :H =
HR
+HL
+HE + HER
+HEL.
The
operators
are written in secondquantized
form.By performing
suitable canonical transformations the interaction term iseliminated,
in lowestorder. The
remaining
hamiltonian can then be transformedusing quasi particle
creation-des- tructionoperators.
Ramanscattering
can then be calculatedusing
first order timedependent perturbation theory, taking
theappropriate higher
order commutators as the(transformed)
per-turbing hamiltonian,
andevaluating
certain matrix elements. Moresimply (in
lowerorder)
theproduct eigenstates
of H0 can be used to describe Ramanscattering, taking
theappropriate
matrix-element of thetransformed, perturbing,
hamiltonian.Comparison
can then be made with the results of Loudon[1].
This method enables us to deal also with the case in which
HEL
islarger
thanHER.
For
example,
ifHEL
were a first orderperturbation,
whileHER
was second order(as perhaps
in anionic
crystal
such asCaF2
where the Fröhlich electron-lattice interaction may berelevant).
Differences between this case, and the former case in which HEL and
HER
are of same order will be discussed.Other
applications
of this method will bepresented
forexample spin-flip (magnetic dipole)
Raman-latticescattering
will beproposed
as a novel process inheavy
ion ioniccrystals.
