PREFACE

The Library of the Division of Building Research was established as an information centre not only for those working in the Division but also to serve the Construction Industry of Canada. The material in the Library is in constant use by merrrbers of D B R . I t s u s e b y t h o s e o u t s i d e the Division is encouraged.

The material herd in the Library is in the form of books, rnagazines and seriars, and reports and pamphrets. Each year about 350 books are received, 1000 rnagazines and serials are received each month, and over 3500 individuil reports and pamphlets are received each year. As the bulk of the material in the Library is in the last-mentioned category, it was thought to be desirable to prepare this index to the subject matter held in the Libraryrs report and pamphlet files.

T h e L i b r a r y f s h o l d i n g s are crassified according to the U n i v e r s a l D e c i m a l Classification (UDC) t h e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n u s e d generally by building research organizations throughout the world. T h e U D C c a n b e used to classify material on any subject. The classification for material rerating to building forms only a part of a very large system. In the course of classifying the report

material, the main headings in the classification have been ex-panded into many subheadings. The index is divided into sections. T h e f i r s t i s a r r a n g e d numericarly according to the uDC; the s e c o n d i s a r r a n g e d alphabetically according to subject.

Miss Mara E. Karnupe who was a librarian with the Division for almost ten years, has been responsible for classifying the Libraryrs holdings. This index was cornpiled under her direction and typed by Mrs. B. McGuire of the Library staff.

It is hoped that this index will not only indicate the subject matter now held in the report files of the Divisionrs Library but will provide a guide to those who have asked, from time to tirne, about classifying information on building. comments a n d s u g g e s t i o n s f r o r n u s e r s of this index will be appreciated.

tr'urther inforrnation on the uDC systern will be gladly supplied.

FOREWORD

This is an index to the report files held by the Library o f t h e D i v i s i o n o f B u i l d i n g R e s e a r c h , National Research Council. It provides a survey of the subject material in the report collection of the Library.

P u b l i c a t i o n s a r e c l a s s i f i e d using two sets of

classification tables - the main tables which give the general subject heading and auxiliary tables which qualify the main

heading. The numbers for the main classes in this index are the same as those given in the F. I. D. Universal Decimal Classification t a b l e s ( B f , i t i s h s t a n d a r d s I n s t i t u t i o n , B. s. 1000 series). In the DBR Library, only three of the ten auxiliary tablea are'used:

t a b l e e o f f o r m ( e . g . , bibliography), point of view (d.g. , research), a n d g e o g r a p h i c a l l o c a t i o n ( e . g . , Ganada). The filee are under constant revision to bring them into line with the current uDc t a b l e s .

The master alphabetical index in the DBR Library is on cards with many see and see also references and e><planatory notes. This index contains about 2000 entries. It wae not possible to duplicate all of them at this time, but thie will be done in a later e d i t i o n o f t h i s i n d e x . M a j o r revieione of clae aee 624,l3l, 624.ls, and 728,6 will also be included.

This index includes about 80 per cent of the approximately zToo files in the Library, which contains over ?0, 000 reports.
