CONTRIBUTORS

Palmer AchesoD is director of graduate studies in teaching English as a second language at Concordia University. He has taught in schools and universities in Tunisia, Mexico, London, Saudi Arabia, and Indiana in the United States.

AllisOD D'Angle jan is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education in l'Université de Montréal. With a background in psycholinguistics, her research has been on second language acquisition among immigrants to Québec, with a particular interest in informaI leaming.

Jack de Bagheera, formerly a member of the Faculty of Education at McGill, has been in charge of c.A.L.S. (the Certificate of English as a Second Lan-guage) at l'Université de Montréal. He has conducted research in Quebec and Ontario into the sociological aspects of second language leaming.

Ellen Bialystok is a Research Officer at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education where she is director of the project "Studies on Second Language Teaching and Learning in Classroom Settings". Her work focuses primarily on the theoretical aspects of second language leaming.

Charles P. Bouton is Chairman of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, at Simon Fraser University. He has published several books in different research areas, particularly in adult second language leaming and child language development. His present interests are the problems of acquisi-tion of meaning in child language development and the study of pathological aspects of the development and functioning of language.

Magdelbayne F. Buteau is Professor and former head of the Department of Education in Second Languages at McGill, where she has been coordinator of the Second Language Monitor Program since 1975.

Nicole Domingue is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at McGill University. She has done work in creole studies and is particularly interested in possible solutions to the problem of teaching a standard language to non-standard speaking children.

May B. Fritb is an Associate Prof essor in the Department of Education in Second Languages at McGill. She has published a number of papers on lin-guis tics, and is interested in the application of relevant linlin-guistic theory to the problems of language teaching and leaming.

Fred Genesee is Research Officer of the Instructional Services Department of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, and an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department of McGill University. His research activities include evaluations of bilingual and multilingual school programs, and in-vestigations of second language leaming.

Michel Laferriere studied sociology at the Sorbonne and Columbia Univer-sity, and political science at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris. He has taught in universities in New York and at I'Universite de Montreal before joining the Department of Social Foundations in Education at McGiII as Assistant Professor, and has conducted both research and practical work in the social and cultural adjustment of racial minorities in Canada and the U.S.A. Jan LobelIe is an Associate Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Education in Second Languages at McGill. His interests are in the training of teachers of modern languages and in bilingual education. He has been a Quebec educational consultant, and was the coordinator of the COCOFIL French Program in Louisiana from 1973 to 1975.

WiI\iam Francis Mackey, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and mem-ber of other national academies, has worked with the government language commissions of Canada, Quebec, Ireland, and Australia. Contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and other reference works, he is the author of over a hundred articles on bilingualism, language didactics and language policy, and of some two dozen books, the best known of which are Language Teaching Analysis and Bilinguisme et contact des iangues.

lames McConnell, for twenty years a master at Eton College, which he made the subject of three books, has written over two dozen novels under a pen-name. In 1974 he was appointed Honorary Research Fellow of the Graduate School of Modern European Studies at the University of Reading, and also became Consultant on international schools to the Department of Research, Education and Science, of the Commission for the European Community. Vera de Ruduyauszky O'Byrne studied at the Universities of Budapest, Dublin, and Caen, and was called to the Bar. She has taught languages in Eire and Africa, has been one of H.M. Inspectors of Schools in Britain, and as Supervisor of Languages for the State of Tasmania organized the teaching of primary French. She is presently a member of the Faculty of Education in the Uni-versity of Newscastle in New South Wales, Australia.

Irene V. SpiIka is Associate Professor of Translation at rUniversite de Montreal. She is a frequent contributor to MET A, Journal des traducteursl Translators' Journal. She is particularly interested in problems of bilingualism and translation theory.

Merrill Swain is an Associate Professor at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, where she also directs the Bilingual Education Project. She has published articles related to bilingual education and second language learning in, for example, Language Learning, TESOL Quarterly, Canadian Modern Language Review, Canadian JOllrnal of Education, International Journal of Psychology. She is editor of the Working Papers Oil Bilingualism.

Richard Tucker is a Professor of Psychology at McGill, specialising in psycholinguistics, with published research in language acquisition and usage in both monolingual and bilingual settings. He has been a project specialist with the Ford Foundation in language centres in South East Asia and in the Middle East, and on September 1st he will take up a new appointment as Director of the Centre of Applied Linguistics in Washington D.C.
