Synonymie

Commençons par affirmer que les vrais synonymes sont rares ; en effet, quelle serait l’uti-lité pour une langue de posséder deux mots qui ont exactement le même sens ? Ainsi, ce que l’on appelle communément des synonymes, ce sont des termes qui ont un sens proche l’un de l’autre. Par exemple, complexe, compliqué et difficile représentent la même notion générale, mais chacun exprime une variante de sens. Il n’est pas toujours facile de faire la différence entre :

• un problème complexe : qui contient plusieurs éléments ;

• un problème compliqué : difficile à comprendre ;

• un problème difficile : qui demande un effort intellectuel en général.

Même si les termes complexe, compliqué et difficile n’ont pas exactement le même sens, on dira qu’ils sont des synonymes. Un dictionnaire de synonymes décrit les nuances de sens entre des termes appelés synonymes.
