(i) FOREWORD

An Annual Report of the Canadian Section i s not i s sued during the y e a r s of the International Conferences and this Report i s t h e r e f o r e a s u m m a r y of the activities of Canadian m e m b e r s of the International Society of Soil Mechanic s and Foundation Engineering f o r the period J u n e 1964 to June 1966.

I t i s published f o r the purpose of keeping Canadians informed of those soil mechanics investigations which a r e being

conducted in t h e i r own country. In this way, i t will a s s i s t i n overcoming the n a t u r a l handicap offered by the widespread geographical distribution of soil mechanics work in Canada.

The r e p o r t includes a l i s t of publications by m e m b e r s of the Canadian Section. In addition, i t includes a l i s t of known thesis topics presently under study and a l i s t of suggested r e s e a r c h projects. I t i s hoped that t h e s e l i s t s will develop into useful s o u r c e s of information. A special effort has been made to reduce r e p o r t s on routine work. I t i s probable, however, that s o m e of the work noted was of a routine nature but was considered worth including because of possible g e n e r a l i n t e r e s t .

Division of Building Research, National R e s e a r c h Council Consolidation Studies

Studies on consolidation-swell c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of heavy clay soils in the consolidometer and suction plate apparatus were continued. F u r t h e r investigations of the effect of the r a t e of loading on the preconsolidation p r e s s u r e s of Leda clay were continued.

Shear Strengths

Triaxial and d i r e c t shear t e s t s were continued on Leda clay. The concept of residual s h e a r strength i s being examined. Using high a i r entry porous stones, negative pore water p r e s s u r e s were measured and attempts were made to c o r r e l a t e these values with swelling p r e s s u r e s on two clays f r o m western Canada.

The influence of s t r a i n on the cohesion intercept and the

angle of shearing resistance of overconsolidated soils i s being investigated. R. C. Thurber & Assocs. Ltd.

A load cell was developed for use inside a triaxial cell to m e a s u r e deviator s t r e s s and thus avoid effects of piston friction.

A s e r i e s of d i r e c t s h e a r t e s t s w e r e c a r r i e d out on shale mylonite a t high normal s t r e s s e s up to 1000 psi and teclmiques developed to observe the soil structure on the failure surface.

Townsend. D. L.

A study has been initiated into the brittle behaviour of soils. The tensile strength i s being studied by means of the Indirect Tension T e s t and Direct Tension m e a s u r e m e n t s , and compressive strength determined with the usual triaxial equipment. The r e s u l t s a r e compared with the r e s u l t s predicted by a modified Griffith-Mohr F a i l u r e Theory. P h a s e I t e s t s a r e being conducted on lime-stabilized soils and the r e s u l t s will be applicable to the f r o s t durability of these soils. P h a s e 11 t e s t s will be conducted with natural soils and the r e s u l t s should yield information on the effect of natural cementation upon the effective s t r e s s cohesion intercept.
