Basic geometry vocabulary

Season 1

Episode AP01 Time frame 1 period

Prerequisites :

Basioneptsofgeometry.

Objectives :

Learn spei voabulary about basi geometry.

Desribe agure.

Draw a gure following instrutions.

Materials :

Geometry glossary.

Mathing ards with desriptions and gures.

Chinese whispers ards.

1 – Matching game with figures and descriptions 10 mins

Half of the students reeive a ard with a basi geometrial gure, the other half a des-

ription of one of these gures. Students mingle to nd their partners without showing

the ards. Then we mix up the ards again and they exhange roles.

2 – Glossary 10 mins

Working inpairs, students are handed out ageometryglossaryand haveto draw agure

where they allappear.

3 – Chinese whispers 35 mins

Students are plaes ina irle and numbered from 1to 20.Odd students are handed

out a gure that they have to desribe to their neighbour, without atually showing it,

so thatthe other an drawit(seretly). Thenthe even studentsdo the sameto their

neighbours,and soonthreeorvetimes.Atthe end,the initialgureisomparedtothe

Figure 1

Drawairleanditsdiameter.Plaethemidpointofthediameter.Througheahendpoint

of the diameter, draw a line segment perpendiular to the diameter and with the same

length. Join the endpoints of these two segments to get a line segment parallel to the

diameter. Finally, draw a line passing through one of the two lastpoints and one of the

endpointsof the diameter, sothat this line isnot perpendiular tothe diameter.

Figure 2

Draw one line segment and the two other line segments passing through the endpoints

of the rst one, perpendiularly to it. The new segments should have the same length

as the initial one and be on the same side of it. Join the seond endpoints of the two

new segments. Draw a linesegment joiningtwo of the four points, diagonally. Plae the

midpoint of this line segment. Draw a line parallel to the initial line segment, passing

through this point. Finally, draw a irle passing through the midpoints of the rst four

segments.

Figure 3

Drawalinesegment.Fromone endpoint,drawanewlinesegment,withthe samelength,

perpendiular to the rst one. Join the seond endpoints of the two line segments. Join

the midpoint ofthe third linesegment, rst to the intersetion of the two rst segments,

then totheir midpoints. Finally, draw a irle passingthrough the three midpoints, and

plae the midpoint ofits diameter.

Figure 4

Draw a segment and divide it into two equal parts. Draw a irle passing through one

endpoint and the midpoint, with its enter on the segment. Do the same with the other

halfofthesegment.Then,drawalinesegmentperpendiulartotherstsegment,passing

Figure 5

Draw a line segment. Throught its midpoint draw a line perpendiular to the segment.

Then,through oneendpointofthesegment,drawalineparalleltothe oneyoujustdrew.

Draw a irle whose enter is the midpoint of the initial segment, passing through the

endpoint where you draw one line. Finally, draw two parallel lines passing through the

intersetionsof the irleand the seondline you drew.

Figure 6

Drawalinesegment.Completethegurewiththreeotherlinesegmentstomakeasquare.

Then, draw two lines, eah one passing through the midpoints of two opposite sides of

the square. Drawanother line passingthrough two opposite orners. Finally, draw a the

irle passing through two orners of the square and its enter.
