calcestruzzo [I].

(**)INTRODUCTION
There is constant interest i n the development of eco-
nomical and efficient retarders in concrete techno-
logy [I]. Alone and in combination w i t h other admixtu-
res they are used for hot-weather concreting opera-
tions, cementing of deep boreholes, and construction
of large structural units such as dams and exposed
aggregate panels. Most are based o n unrefined Nu,
Ca,and NHI salts of lignosulphonic acids or modifications
and derivations of this group, o n hydrocarboxylic acids
and their salts, carbohydrates and some inorganic
compounds.
Attempts have been made to determine the effective-
ness of some aliphatic alcohols, including methanol, as
retarders for cement hydration
[2].
There is contro-
versy as to whether they are retarders or inert with
respect to cement hydration
[3-51.
A recent study sup-
plied evidence lhat methanol interacts w i t h the CH
and C-S-H phases in cement [ 6 ,
71.
Indeed, the action
of many admixtures involves some sort of interaction,
so that there is a good possibility that methanol also
affects the hydration of cement [ I , 81. Little informa-
tion exists in the literature. Methanol is relatively

PARTE SPERIMENTALE
I1 silicato tricalcico (C3S triclino)
e
stato fornito dalla
Portland Cement Association, USA.
guente composizione: SiO2 = 21,16%, A1203 = 5,87%,
Fez03 = 2,21%, CaO = 63,07%, MgO = 1,56%. SO3 =

NazO = 0,797%.
i:
ore a 1

e 8%.
Metodi
Calorimetria a conduzione
1'Institute of Applied Physics, Delft, Olanda [9]. I1
Analisi termica
L'analisi termica (ATD, ATG e ATGD)
e
stata eseguita
usando un termoanalizzatore 1090 DuPont accessoria-

I
7
giorni. L'aggiun-
ta di CH3OH comporta un aumento del period0 di
induzione. L'effetto del metanolo
e
quindi simile a
e
do il CH3OH e aggiunto a1 CH.
[ 7 ] .
In ge-
6 ) . I1 confront0 delle

T h e amount of CH formed at different hydration times
i n the presence of CH30H is given i n fig.

At all times
u p t o seven days the amount of CH is lower i n pastes
containing CH30H. T h e differences i n the amounts of
CH formed are greater at early ages. After three days
the rate of formation of lime i n all samples is reduced.
T h e degree of hydration of C3S i n terms of disap-
pearance of C3S at different times is plotted i n fig. 4.
At one day the amount of C3S hydrated is 41, 27 and
10% i n samples containing 0, 1,6 and
4,0%
CH30H. T h e
corresponding values a t seven days are
52,
43 and 41%.
Results show that methanol decreases the amplitude
of the conduction calorimetric curve, the total amount
of heat developed, the degree of hydration, and the
amount of CH for all times u p t o seven days. T h e in-
duction period is increased w i t h addition of CH3OH.
Thus, the effect of rnethanol is similar t o that f o r other
retarders, and the effect increases w i t h amount of
CH30H. This retarding action m a y be due t o the for-
mation of
a barrier layer around unhydrated particles,
poisoning of the C-S-H and CH nuclei. B o t h mechanisms
involve some sort of interaction between CH and C-S-H
and the retarder, for example, that occurring w i t h cal-
c i u m lignosulphonate [ I l l . Figure 5 shows the amount
of heat developed, even i n the first few minutes, w h e n
CH30H is added t o CH. T h e amount of heat is m u c h
greater for the reference sample containing CH30H
than for CH30H-CaCOj mixtures.
Infrared spectra of CH containing rnethanol give evi-
dence of the formation of a n e w compound [7]. Usually
the amount of CH formed and the degree of hydration
of C3S bear a linear relation for a given waterlC3S ratio
(fig.

Heat developed at different times in portland cement paste, ( W / C = 0,70) containing methanolT h e retarding action may also result from a barrier
layer surrounding unhydrated particles, poisoning C-S-H
and CH nuclei. I n addition, methanol retards the hydra-
tion of the C3A component in cement, as is evident from
the early heat development curves. T h e calorimetric
peak i n the first few minutes following mixing is gene-
rally attributed to reactions involving the C3A compo-
nent. This peak is reduced w h e n hydration occurs i n

Reduction in compressive strengths for u p to 28 days
may be due t o both lower degree of hydration and

may also occur i n the presence of CH30H.

-
Use of methanol a s a n admixture for portland cement
-
Synopsis - Hydration of C3S and portland cement a t water/solid ratios of025, 0.40 and 0,70 and methanol contents of 0, 1,6, 4 and 8 per cent has been studied using DTA, TGA, DTGA and conduction calo- rimetry. I t was found that methanol retards hydration, and there was evidence of interaction between the hydrated products and
methanol. For cement, setting times increased and compressive strengths decreased up to 28 days a t all dosages of methanol.

Methanol als Zusatzmittel fiir Portlandzement - Zusammenfassung
-
