in LB. When fed ad libitum and on a freechoice,
a cereal-based diet

was to establish a programme for the selection and utilization of boars in a closed line with a lowdegree
ofinbreeding.
If we admit that it is necessary to have at
least ! 4 boars
on servicesimultaneously,
thisstudy
may lead to the
following simple
rule :Every
21days,
selection of a new young boar and elimination of the boar which hasalreadyperformed
thegreatest
number of services.On condition of an
equivalent
utilization of each boar and of a randommating
programmeexcluding
sib or half-sibmatings,
this method maygive
thefollowing
results :- - a selection pressure
(selection intensity/generation
intervalratio)
of 3j-!5points
on the boarsaccording
to themagnitude
of the line ;- correct economic
management depending
onproduction

for another purpose.This
Large
White herd, established in19 63’with
10 boars and 120 sows, wasprimarily
used fora selection
experiment
on litter size at birth.Being
notsubjected
to any selection ongrowth
andcarcass
traits,
the Galle herd could be considered as a control for theseproduction traits, supposed
to be
genetically independent
of the litter size. Available data consisted of measurements on6
0
gilts
from the Galleherd,
tested incompetition
with 112contemporary gilts
from 26 selectionherds of the
Large
Whito breed.Comparisons
were madewithin-testing period
for 14 traits.Results
definitely
show a favourablegenetic
trend ofLarge
White breed since19 6 5 ,
both for rate and economy ofgain
and for most ofbody-composition
traits. The estimatedgenetic gain
is around7 . 5
F per year. Another
point
of concern is the unfavourable evolution of meatquality, particularly
of ultimate
pH
of muscle. Thegenetic assumptions underlying
thevalidity
of this estimation ofgenetic change
are discussed. A statisticalanalysis
of alarger
