The Technology Monitoring solution „SmartScout“ from Fraunhofer IAO
uses the TEMIS software Luxid® as the basis for document analysis
Basic challenge „SmartScout“
How to make sure not to miss relevant technologies, markets, competition?
How to define a systematic, replicable aproach to identify new technologies and ideas for new markets?
SmartScout is a software based analysis instrument, allowing to quickly arrive at key conclusions and analyses
about technologies, markets and competitors

Overview „SmartScout“
• Software based Analysis of large document collections
− Early identification of technologies
− Early Identification of new markets
− Monitoring competitors
• Allows identifcation of new (yet unknown) markets and technologies
• Offers graphical analysis tools in order to quickly analyse relevant information
• Provides access to documents from a variety of sources:
− Special interest DBs (WTI, Elsevier, ThomsonReuters, u.a.)
− Patents
− Press, Technology portals
− Internet

Competition analysis
Case study: Identification of potential markets
Goal: Application areas for very fact actuators (<1ms)?
Result: List of ~50 potential markets
Collision protection systems Injury protection
Protecting against overcharging Lasershutter
Firing magnets in armed land vehicles
Highspeed separators for good/bad parts separation Kabuki systems
Security systems in e-mobility (shutting off batteries, … )
…
Analysis of approx. 10.000 Documents Effort: 3 days
Problem and goal of the analysis
White-Spot-Analysis as a tool to develop new methods!
Problem:
Decreasing efficiency of turbine blades because of worn our blades
Economic repair today possible only with low pressure blades
Repaired high pressure blades don‘t attain original performance
Goal: Develop an efficient methods for the repair of high pressure turbine blades
Result of the analysis phase:
13 Ideas (White Spots) for generative repair approaches were defined
Assessment of the identified ideas:
3 White Spots on Repair ofhigh pressure turbine blades by Selective Laser Melting/ Laser-Powder- weldingwere developed to market maturity, 1 Patent filed to protect the most promising approach
Case study: Repair of turbine blades
