Collaborative study with the Clinical-Organizational Ethics Unit of CHU Sainte-Justine concerning equality rights, value conflicts and the resolution of complex ethical situations in three (3) services: neonatology, intensive care and hemato-oncology.

Project funded by the Secrétariat du Québec aux relations canadiennes, the Centre de recherche sur Société, Droit et Religions (SoDRUS) and the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité et la démocratie (CRIDAQ) ($27,740). In collaboration with Prof. David Koussens (PI) and Prof. Dia Dabby (co-investigator).

Multidisciplinary colloquium on public administration and issues related to ethnocultural, religious and Aboriginal diversities in Quebec, bringing together more than twenty (20) speakers from several disciplines, on March 25 and 26, 2021 at the University of Sherbrooke (Longueuil campus).

"Experiences of Emergency Department Caregivers during the Pandemic at COVID-19: A Prospective Qualitative Study". Emergency Department, Research Centre, CHU Sainte-Justine.

Project funded by the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre ($20,255). In collaboration with Dr. Nathalie Gaucher (PI), Pre Claude-Julie Bourque, Maryse Lagacé, Dr. Évelyne Doyon-Trottier, Dr. Véronique Castonguay, Érika Fontaine-Pagé, Dr. Nicolas Elahazy, Dr. Simon Berthelot, Dr. Samina Ali, Dr. Graham Thompson and Dr. Ran Golman (co-investigators). Study to document the reality of the practice of care in an emergency room in the context of the VIDOC-19 pandemic. In collaboration with seven (9) emergency departments across Canada, the study aims to gather the experiences of 42 emergency room staff members through 40 virtual focus groups held in April, May and June 2020.

Project funded by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec ($57,143). In collaboration with Pr David Koussens (PI) and Pr Frédéric Dejean (co-investogator). Drafting of a guide for higher education institutions to enable the implementation of planned procedures for receiving and processing requests for reasonable accommodation on religious grounds, in an inclusive perspective.

"Perceptions of Practice Changes by Members of the Emergency Department Resuscitation Care Teams during the COVID-19 Pandemic", Emergency Department, Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal - Université de Montréal.

With Dr. Véronique Castonguay (PI), Dr. Virginie Labossière, Dr. Véribile Huard, Dr. Alexis Cournoyer and Patrick Lavoie (co-investigator). Study of changes in practices and new intervention protocols for cardiac resuscitation within the team of the emergency department of the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal - University of Montreal.

"Freedom of Religion in Hospitals: The Socio-Legal Context of Emergency Departments". Faculty of Law, University of Sherbrooke/Department of Religious Studies, University of Ottawa.

Declined offer from FRQSC ($90,000). Study on the right to freedom of religion in the context of emergency care. In collaboration with three emergency departments in Quebec, the research, which has two dimensions (250 hours of in situ ethnographic observation of work units and 40 semi-directed interviews with staff), aims to analyze formal and informal institutional mechanisms for adapting emergency care to value pluralism.

"La réalité interculturelle en soins infirmiers". Direction of Studies, Cégep André-Laurendeau.

Project funded by the Cégep André-Laurendeau's direction ($8,572 equivalent release from teaching duties and

$3,510 for student training). Identification of the main issues related to living together in the nursing program.

Semi-structured interviews (15 with teachers) and focus groups (nearly 40 students); an analysis report (33 pages) was submitted in 2019 to support the implementation of training in inclusive pedagogy for teaching staff.

"La réalité interculturelle au Cégep André-Laurendeau". Direction of Studies, Cégep André-Laurendeau.

Project funded by the Cégep André-Laurendeau's direction ($23,185 equivalent release from teaching duties).

Study of the portrait of intercultural relations within the Cégep André-Laurendeau college in Montreal. Focus groups were held with approximately 30 students and a survey was distributed (over 600 respondents). An analysis report (152 pages) was submitted to the Cégep's management at the end of the research, containing several recommendations to support the writing of a new institutional policy on living together.

"Les espaces destinés aux prières dans les établissements d’enseignement supérieur. Enjeux juridiques et sociaux". Faculty of Law, University of Sherbrooke.

Project funded by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec ($47,349). In collaboration with Pr David Koussens (PI) and Pr Frédéric Dejean (co-investogator). Study of administrative practices in institutions of higher education regarding the presence of prayer spaces and the management of requests for reasonable accommodation. A sample of several institutions was selected, involving the conduct of 95 semi-directed interviews with the staff of the participating institutions. An analysis report (72 pages) was submitted to the Ministry at the end of the research, including a portrait of the situation and a list of recommendations.

Faculty of Law, University of Sherbrooke.

Project funded by the Vice-Rector of Student Life at the Université de Sherbrooke ($3,000). In collaboration with Prof. David Koussens (principal investigator). Study of the institutional portrait of accommodation requests within the university. A report (36 pages), containing recommendations regarding the implementation of an institutional policy, was submitted to the Vice-Rector, Student Life, in March 2018.

THESIS

Lavoie, Bertrand, 2017, La foi musulmane et la laïcité en France et au Québec, entre régulation publique et négociation quotidienne (420 pages).

In my thesis, I studied constitutional issues of diversity issues among civil servants in Quebec and France. I studied the career paths of 58 civil servants and aspiring civil servants in Quebec and France who are distinguished by their ethnic origins or religious beliefs, in order to analyze their different professional strategies deployed on a daily basis to reconcile their status as public officials with their cultural and religious identities.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Member of the Montreal Intercultural Council

On November 18, 2019, I was appointed as a volunteer member of the Montreal Intercultural Council (CIM) by the Montreal City Council. Made up of fifteen (15) members representing the ethnocultural diversity of Montreal and established by an Act of the National Assembly, the CIM is an independent municipal advisory body that advises the City of Montreal on all matters pertaining to intercultural relations. As a member of the CIM, I participated in the drafting of the opinion Systemic Racism. Acting to Transform Institutional Culture, Change Attitudes and Strengthen Citizen Capacities [adopted by the General Assembly on March 11, 2020].

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER Training of physicians

In collaboration with Dr. Nathalie Gaucher, I organized a training session on November 14, 2019, entitled "Cultural and Religious Diversity: Legal Issues in Healthcare", for the team of physicians in the emergency department of CHU Sainte-Justine. The session focused on the state of the law with respect to cultural and religious diversity and also included practice exercises related to health-related cases.

Training of magistrates

In collaboration with Prof. David Koussens, I organized a training session on November 2, 2019, entitled "The Legal Management of Ethnocultural and Religious Differences: Between Accommodation and Equality", for some 40 municipal court judges. The session focused on case law and legal issues in public law and rights and freedoms related to the institutional management of differences.

Training of managers in college education

I organized a training session on November 15, 2017, entitled "Education with Respect for Differences", designed to train managers and practitioners from three public colleges in the Montreal area. The session focused on the issues and challenges of developing institutional policies for managing ethnic, cultural and religious diversity.
