Introduction

Modern building technology, turning i n c r e a s i n g l y t o the u s e of light m a t e r i a l s and p r e f a b r i c a t e d elements, has solved many of the attendant prob--.ms such a s strength, durability arid f i r e r e s i s t a n c e , but t h e r e r e m a i n s the m a j o r p r o b l e m of adequate sound insulation. The m o s t r e a l i s t i c approach was to identify by s o c i a l s u r v e y s c e r t a i n constructions where the sound insulation was deemed adequate by the m a - jority of the occupants. Then recommendations w e r e devised that r e f l e c t e d the c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of those p a r t i c u l a r constructions. S e v e r a l p a r a l l e l developments of t h i s s o r t , in Europe and in North America, culminated in 9 p r o p o s a l f o r an i n t e r -

The p r o c e s s by which t n e p r e s e n t r e q u i r e m e n t s have developed was a rough, e m p i r i c a l one, but the method that finally evolved i s itself v e r y p r e c i s e .
