sustainable dance club

responsible clubbing

The Sustainable Dance Club is a concept by:

Döll - Atelier voor Bouwkunst is an architecture firm that consists of an international team of 30 highly qualified staff based in Rotterdam. Besides the core business in architecture and urbanism the firm develops innovative concepts and strategies to address social issues from an architectural point of view. The firm was founded in 2003 by architect Henk Döll. (www.dollab.nl)

Enviu - innovators in sustainability is an international organization with a focus on sustainable entrepreneurship and developing profitable solutions for environmental and social issues. The foundation facilitates young professionals in starting up and scaling up their sustainable activities.

Enviu operates in the Netherlands and medium income countries (www.enviu.org).

project management by Cultural Development Cultural Development is an organisation that initiates, realises and manages cultural projects in Rotterdam.

Their goal is to stimulate creativity under young people and to combine creativity with sustainability. In 2001 they started the multimedia club Off_Corso in the old Corso cinema.Other projects are the Rotterdam Electronic Music Festival (REMF), American Dreams (short film that won Hollywood Movie award in 2006) and interim management for Live at Nighttown.

Going out in a hip and trendy club and feel extra happy because you contribute to environmental processes. This idea forms the basis for the Sustainable

Dance Club. The Sustainable Dance Club is a creative concept of Rotterdam based organizations Enviu – innovators in sustainability and Döll – Atelier voor Bouwkunst. The idea focuses on integrating sustainable design, technologies and entrepreneurship in a club environment. The goal is to introduce sustainability to a large and young audience by making it sexy and profitable.

The Sustainable Dance Club combines

contemporary lifestyle with the latest innovations on sustainability. Soon you can generate energy while dancing on the electricity generating sustainable dance floor, the color of the walls changes without any energy use as a reaction to your heat and you can drink a biological beer near the rain water basin that is used to flush the toilets on the ‘relax roof’. These are just a few examples of what the Sustainable Dance Club can entail. The Sustainable Dance Club is developed as a brand: with time you may find sustainable dance clubs all over the world!

a toolbox for ideas

To realise the ultimate Sustainable Dance Club a bottom-up growing ‘toolbox’ is developed. the toolbox consists of innovative ideas that address the central themes of sustainable clubbing. These are divided in design themes, core business & ovehead and technology. They aim to raise positive awareness for the clubber and to provide profitable solutions for the club owners. We invite people to share their ideas and experiences with other ‘toolbox-users’

to create a worldwide Sustainable Dance Club community. Entrepreneurs and club owners can use the modules to create their individual Sustainable Dance Club. Döll, Enviu and Cultural Development offer their expertise to design and implement a customized Sustainable Dance Club concept for existing and new clubs.

fuel for innovation

Besides implementations of ‘proven technologies’

like wind turbines, solar energy, rain water for toilet flushing, we also develop new technologies. The energy (re)generating dance floor is the most famous example, capturing the sweat of dancing people to flush the toilets and energy saving measures like smart acoustics are other ones. For these types of innovative initiatives the team works together with strong professionals and knowledge institutes like the Delft University of Technology.

the critical mass

On 14 October 2006 we organized the first sustainable dance party. Over 1.400 people enjoyed the music, atmosphere, the sustainable decorations and the creative contributions of vj’s Urbi et Orbi and artists like Mischa van Teeffelen, that were inspired by the theme. We demonstrated that cool clubbing and sustainability can complement eachother.

to be continued

As a result of the big success not only club owners but also festival organizers around the world have shown interest to implement the concept. This is why we intend to develop the sustainable dance club not only as a concept for permanent clubs, but also as a mobile event for clubs and festivals.
