Mes vacances avaient bien commencé. Le vol n’avait pas été diffi cile et je passais des journées fantastiques à la plage. Normalement, je m’ennuie un peu en vacances mais cette fois, au bord de la mer, je m’amusais bien et je bronzais beaucoup. Pourtant, un après-midi, je me suis endormi en lisant un roman et j’ai été piqué par un insecte. Je suis allé à l’hôpital où on m’a dit que ce n’était pas grave, mais j’ai passé le reste du séjour à l’hôtel car j’étais malade.

Role play (2nd–8th Step)

This role play covers the topic of travel and tourism and includes the present tense only.

Students are required to answer an unexpected question and to ask the teacher a question.

Photo task (7th–12th Step)

This photo task covers the topic of travel and tourism, and includes three time frames. Students are required to respond to three given questions and two unprepared questions.

[C’est une chambre dans un hôtel. Il y a un grand lit, un fauteuil et une télé. Je vois aussi une terrasse avec une piscine et il y a vue sur la mer.]

[J’aime les vacances actives, alors je pratique beaucoup de sports comme le volley et le foot. J’adore nager dans la mer ou faire des sports nautiques. Il y a deux ans, pendant mes vacances, j’ai essayé le ski nautique et j’ai trouvé ça génial.]

[Je préfère aller en vacances avec ma famille parce qu’on s’entend bien et qu’on peut passer du temps ensemble. Nous aimons les mêmes choses, alors c’est parfait.]

[L’année prochaine, j’irai en France avec ma famille. Nous allons louer un gîte sur la côte en Normandie et j’espère qu’il fera chaud. Je vais visiter les musées et les châteaux de la région puisque l’histoire m’intéresse.]

6 Quel est ton moyen de transport préféré pour partir en vacances? Pourquoi?

[J’aime prendre l’avion parce que c’est un moyen de transport rapide et assez confortable. Cependant, mon père déteste les avions, donc il préfère aller partout en voiture.]

Writing task 90 (2nd–12th Step)

This task requires students to write approximately 90 words on the topic of holidays, covering all four bullet points and using three time frames (present, past and future).

Sample answer (8th Step)

Normalement, je passe mes vacances d’été dans un petit hôtel dans le nord de la France. C’est une belle région où j’adore faire des promenades.

Cet été, nous sommes allés dans un grand camping au pays de Galles. J’ai passé beaucoup de temps sur la plage où j’ai bronzé. Tous les jours, mes parents lisaient des magazines et ma sœur jouait au frisbee avec notre chien.

En vacances, j’aime manger les plats de la région. Par exemple, en France, j’ai essayé des crêpes locales!

Writing task 150 (7th–12th Step)

This task requires students to write approximately 150 words on the importance of holidays and an account of a disastrous holiday, covering both bullet points. Students should aim to include three time frames (present, past and future) and some more complex structures in their writing.

Selon moi, les vacances sont très importantes car il faut se détendre un peu après avoir travaillé dur pendant le reste de l’année.

De plus, on peut oublier les soucis de la vie quotidienne et découvrir d’autres pays stimulants. Mon ami Paul n’aime pas aller en vacances et il dit que c’est un gaspillage d’argent. Je sais que les vacances sont souvent chères mais à mon avis, les vacances sont essentielles!

L’année dernière, nous sommes allés en France et c’était nul! Sur la route de l’aéroport, notre voiture est tombée en panne et nous avons dû prendre un taxi. Le vol était diffi cile et mon père a vomi. Une fois arrivés à Paris, on a découvert que notre hôtel était sale. J’étais très déçu. Le dernier jour des vacances, on m’a volé mon sac dans le métro. Quel désastre! J’aimerais bien visiter la France encore une fois mais je voudrais passer des vacances plus relaxantes.
