SUBJECT

READINGS OF SETT LEMENT AT THE QUEENSW A Y OVERPASS STRUCTURES AT METCALFE AND ELGIN STREETS, OTTAWA

This note describes the installations of reference points and deep bench marks and the method of readings used in the measurement of

settlements at these two overpass structures. It includes a table for the

compiling of results which will be sent to the above parties after each survey.

Instrumentation

The instrumentation for these bridge structures was installed in accordance with plans outlined in a previous technical note, TN 381,

Sept. 1962. One-inch reinforcing bars placed vertically in the footings

and protruding an inch above the upper surface were used as reference

points until the structures were completed. Steel sockets were then

placed in the abutment walls at levels about 2 ft above finished sidewalk elevations, by boring holes slightly larger than the sockets and setting

them in neat cement. The locations of these reference points are shown

-Deep Bench Marks

Two deep bench marks were installed, one at each of the two

overpass sites and placed as near as possible to the structures. Details

of bench mark installations have been described (1). The actual depths

of the bench mark tips are 81 ft at Metcalfe Street and 85 ft at Elgin Street; their locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

Elevations relative to BM 26 (De Leuw Cather) assumed to be 300.000 cm were established and are as follows:

DBM 10 (Metcalfe St. ) 366.981 cm

DBM 11 (Elgin St. ) 329.459 cm

(It should be noted that the final elevation of these DBMs will be adjusted by cutting down to ground level when grading of the project is complete. )

Level Surveys

Readings of settlement will be obtained periodically during construction and at intervals of time ther eafter until it appear s that

settlement is complete. An engineer's optical level will be used to take

the readings of settlement relative to the nearest deep bench mark. A letter

will be mailed to each of the parties involved, giving the total settlement

to date at each station. A table is included for the compilation of these

readings.
