FOREWORD T h i s Annual R e p o r t i s a s u m m a r y of t h e a c t i v i t i e s of C a n a d i a n m e m b e r s of t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l S o c i e t y of S o i l M e c h a n i c s and F o u n d a t i o n E n g i n e e r i n g f o r t h e p e r i o d J u l y 1960 t o May 1961. L a b o r a t o r y s t u d i e s i n d i c a t e a s u b s t a n t i a l r a n g e i n computed p r e - c o n s o l i d a t i o n p r e s s u r e of L e d a c l a y depending on t e s t p r o c e d u r e . S t u d i e s h a v e b e e n extended t o i n c l u d e m e a s u r e m e n t of p o r e p r e s s u r e d i s s i p a t i o n a f t e r loading i n o r d e r t o e v a l u a t e t h e influence of p r i m a r y and s e c o n d a r y consolidation. L a b o r a t o r y s t u d i e s a r e continuing t o a s s e s s f u n d a m e n t a l and e m p i r i c a l s h e a r s t r e n g t h p a r a m e t e r s of L e d a clay. In p a r t i c u l a r , t h e i n f l u e n c e of w a t e r m i g r a t i o n d u r i n g t r i a x i a l t e s t i n g i s being studied. T h e m e a s u r e m e n t of s e n s i t i v i t y i s u n d e r r e v i e w b e c a u s e t h i s i m p o r t a n t p r o p e r t y h a s b e e n found t o b e g r e a t l y dependent on m e t h o d of t e s t . S t u d i e s a r e u n d e r w a y t o d e t e r m i n e t h e e f f e c t of r e m o v i n g c e m e n t i n g a g e n t s on t h e m e c h a n i c a l a n a l y s i s of s o i l s . In a potash shaft in Saskatchewan, t h e sinking o p e r a t i o n s a r e c a r r i e d out through t h e B l a i r m o r e f o r m a t i o n under t h e p r o t e c t i o n of cement grouting. Until now, s i m i l a r s h a f t s w e r e sunk u s i n g t h e f r e e z i n g method a s protection. If t h e s u c c e s s s o f a r evidenced by t h e grouting p r o t e c t i o n i s m a i n t a i n e d t o t h e end of the job, t h i s method will have p r o v e n to be a g r e a t saving of t i m e and money.
