A review o f the press over the past f e w months confirms it: <~ Davos is exhor- ted to make a great effort for Africa. Mr. Blair, Mr. Clinton and the singer Bono attempt to mobilize participants o f the f o r u m o f the rich ~.
A great debate took place ~< G8 and Africa, rhetoric or action ~ with the same participants plus Bill Gates and a certain number o f African presidents.
A m o n g p o o r countries, the poorest are African. A m o n g countries stricken by disease, the most stricken are African. The priorities are water, health, educa- tion, and communication. I f great projects are necessary, smaller efforts should not be overlooked. << The current afro-pessimism must be replaced by a finer approach more in tune with the assets and constraints o f the continent ~ (Sylvie Brunel, geographer). Our African association f o r Continuing Education in Hepatic Gastroenterology ( A A F F C H G E ) should be in step with this kind o f reasoning.
<< In our technological society where we are losing the h u m a n dimension, we have a cultural need f o r Africa (Bernard Granjon, H o n o r a r y president o f Mddecins du Monde). I invite you to read further on this subject with E.C. Ndji- toyap Ndam's article at the end o f this review.
Finally, I would like to insist on two essential points which deserve reflection : 1) J Attali wrote in T h e E x p r e s s on 03/05/04: << The rich Francophones can- not hope that other countries in the community will remain in their sphere if they do not find the means for development. In particular, the elites o f French- speaking Africa will seek support, contacts and thus a culture and a language elsewhere. They will attend - - they attend already - - universities in the United States;for the most part they will join English speaking networks... To change that, it would be necessary to launch some strong projects.., create a specific financial instrument, charged with helping to m a k e cultural industries profi- table, giving rise to newspapers, television, publishing houses, and data-proces- sing projects in the French language. With that, they could participate in the invention o f a mode o f development f o u n d e d more in solidarity, more cultural, and diametrically opposed to A n g l o - S a x o n individualist materialism. The world would have everything to gain form this diversity ~.
2) P.A. Wiltzer (delegate Minister for the co-operation) in an article entitled
~< A new generation o f African women ~ wrote: ~< African w o m e n have a driving role to play in the development o f the black continent... Traditionally, women occupy a central place in African societies... The commission o f the African Union created two years ago, based on the model o f the European Union but with the fifty countries o f Africa, is made up o f t e n members half o f which, by statute, are women. In this area, the Africans are way ahead o f us ! ~.
The recent film by Sembene Ousmane << Moolaade ~ testifies to this.., so does the proportion o f African women colleagues within the A A F F C H G E compa- red to the number o f women colleagues in the CA o f our learned societies. Let us take account o f it.
I f one contemplates what France did in one century f o r education and health in Africa, it can only make your head spin. Would we be today these << dwarves perched on the shoulders o f giants ~ ? Perhaps then, as underlined by Bernard o f Chartres, let us benefit from this height to see more and farther than them. Let us agree to take up the challenge: Africa should be helped !!!
