I. Aquatic sports

Regarde bien les images ci-dessous. Tu vas entendre des descriptions de sports aquatiques.

Pour chaque description écris dans la grille la lettre de l’image qui correspond à chaque numéro.

Attention : il y a deux images qui ne seront pas décrites ! Tu as 30 secondes pour observer les images.

Tu entendras les descriptions deux fois.

1. You can practise this sport on a lake or on the ocean. You ski behind a motor boat and the boat pulls you very fast. In summer lots of people do this sport on Lake Geneva.

2. People practise this sport on Lake Geneva in summer, too. You can do it in big or small boats. When it is windy, you can go very fast.

3. If you like individual sports, this is the right sport for you. Under the water, you discover new plants and new fish. And you can enjoy the beauty of the place. You’re a bit of an explorer.

4. When you practise this sport, you make a lot of efforts to move IN the water. Indeed, you must swim all the time. This sport is a game like handball. A team has seven players. And the players must catch the ball and score a goal for the team.

5. How dangerous this sport is! You can be easily scared because the boat goes very fast on the river. Some people practise this sport on the Arve river in Geneva. But you must be with three or four friends to control the boat.

6. What a nice silhouette they have in their swimming costumes. In this sport, there’s a team too, but it’s not a game. They swim to produce a kind of dance. So they must learn all the

movements very precisely and follow the music.

II. The Story of the Titanic “The Unsinkable Boat”

Écoute attentivement l’histoire du Titanic.

What do you know about the Titanic?

Well, maybe you know the film “Titanic” produced by James Cameron in 1997 with the actor Leonardo Di Caprio in the main role. It was a very beautiful and romantic film telling the story of the Titanic. So let’s listen to this story:

1912, Wednesday, April 10^th: the Titanic was ready to leave Southampton on the south coast of England. It was its first voyage. Destination: New York.

The Titanic was a very big boat, the biggest boat in the world. It was a very beautiful, luxurious and modern boat. It was 270 metres long and it weighed about 50,000 tons. It had a swimming-pool, a tennis court, a gym and very big dining-rooms. On the top deck there were several bars and boutiques. The Titanic had 2200 people on board, some famous and rich Americans, English and Swiss, but also some families with children and some poor people who wanted to emigrate to the USA. It carried a lot of food for the voyage. The newspapers called it « the unsinkable boat » “the boat which cannot go down”.

Edward Smith, who was English and who had a long career as captain, was the captain of the Titanic. He was a very courageous man and he wanted to prove that the Titanic was faster than all the other boats. Although he knew that there were icebergs, he decided to take the quickest route to the North. At 11.40 p.m. on April 14^th, the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean.

About three hours later it went down with 1500 people on board. At this dramatic moment the orchestra of the Titanic was still playing music. Captain Smith helped the passengers and stayed on the boat to the last minute. He died as a hero. The Titanic did not have enough lifeboats, so only 705 passengers and members of the crew survived. The Titanic went down in 3780 metres of water in the North Atlantic Ocean.

For 73 years nobody knew exactly where it was.

Then, on September 1^st 1985, the French and the Americans finally discovered the wreck of the Titanic with the help of a robot equipped with an underwater camera. It was about 2 a.m. – very close to the exact hour that the Titanic went down.

In July 1986 Dr Ballard, the leader of the American expedition, returned to the wreck in a submarine and took a lot of photographs. You can see these photographs in a very interesting book called “The Discovery of the Titanic”.
