STATEMENT BY MEMBERS OF COUNCIL Councillor Lavigne made a statement
As a member of Council I would like to speak with you this evening about Ambulance NB and their services provided in our region. We all know in the past they have provided good service but we also know that there must be improvement to protect the well being of our citizens. I am very concerned about our citizens especially after a tragic ski-doo accident on January 17th of this year that took the life of a young man in our town. The Dalhousie Fire Department was dispatched by 911 to assist to extract a person from a snowmobile accident. When they arrived on the scene, there was no ambulance there yet so 2 firefighters responded on foot with only their regular clothing or office clothing in minus 30 weather. When they arrived on the scene they immediately started CPR and about that time Ambulance NB arrived at the command post which was almost 1 km from the accident scene. The Paramedics then refused to go to the accident scene, the first answer was that it was too cold and we are not dressed for this. Our winter clothes are locked at headquarters in Campbellton. We are also worried the same could happen to us. At the point they did not even know what was going on at the scene of the accident.
Other firefighters made their way to the scene some walking and some getting a ride on a snowmobile. The Paramedics then were standing in the Firefighter work truck where it was warm. At this point I asked the Paramedics for a board and a set of straps and proceeded to the scene, they refused to come with me. As an ex-paramedic myself I quickly realized that there was nothing else to do for the young man and I told the firefighters to stop CPR and we covered him up. It now became an extraction to bring the body out. We were very disappointed that the Ambulance attendants did not come to the scene. The following week our Fire Chief received a call from Ambulance NB to make a complaint against our firefighters for not being professional! Please tell me who was not being professional? This service will have a very negative impact on our region. If this

En tant que membre du Conseil, j'aimerais vous parler ce soir d'Ambulance NB et de ses services offerts dans notre région. Nous savons tous que par le passé, ils ont fourni de bons services, mais nous savons également qu'il doit y avoir des améliorations pour protéger le bien-être de nos citoyens. Je suis très préoccupé par nos concitoyens, en particulier après un tragique accident de ski- doo survenu le 17 janvier dernier qui a coûté la vie à un jeune homme de notre ville. Le service d'incendie de Dalhousie a été
dépêché par le 911 pour aider à extraire une personne d'un accident de motoneige.
Quand ils sont arrivés sur les lieux, il n'y avait pas encore d'ambulance, donc 2 pompiers ont répondu à pied avec seulement leurs vêtements habituels ou de bureau dans une température de moins 30. Lorsqu'ils sont arrivés sur les lieux, ils ont immédiatement commencé la RCR et en ce temps, Ambulance NB est arrivée au poste de commandement qui était à près de 1 km du lieu de l'accident.
Les ambulanciers paramédicaux ont alors refusé de se rendre sur les lieux de l'accident, la première réponse a été qu'il faisait trop froid et que nous ne sommes pas habillés pour cela. Nos vêtements d'hiver sont fermés au siège social à Campbellton. Nous
craignons également que la même chose ne nous arrive. À ce moment-là, ils ne savaient même pas ce qui se passait sur les lieux de l'accident. D'autres pompiers se sont rendus sur les lieux en marchant et en se baladant en motoneige. Les ambulanciers
paramédicaux se tenaient alors dans le camion de pompier où il faisait chaud. À ce stade, j'ai demandé aux ambulanciers paramédicaux une planche et un jeu de sangles et je suis allé sur les lieux, ils ont refusé de venir avec moi. En tant qu'ancien ambulancier, j'ai rapidement réalisé qu'il n'y avait rien d'autre à faire pour le jeune homme et j'ai dit aux pompiers d'arrêter la RCR et nous l'avons couvert. C'est devenu une extraction pour faire sortir le corps. Nous avons été très déçus que les ambulanciers ne soient pas venus sur les lieux. La semaine

I would like Ambulance NB to give us an explanation why they refused to come to the scene. I would like to know their policy in regards to such an incident. We had transportation ready to bring them to the scene but they refused. In closing I would like to thank the Dalhousie Fire Department for their efforts to respond to this accident scene. Thank you!

professionnel? Ce service aura un impact très négatif sur notre région. Si cela devait se produire à nouveau lorsque quelqu'un se blesse sur nos sentiers, un service rapide et efficace serait important. J'en parle pour faire prendre conscience de la question. J'aimerais qu'Ambulance NB nous explique pourquoi ils ont refusé de venir sur les lieux. Je voudrais connaître leur politique concernant un tel incident. Nous avions des moyens de transport prêts à les amener sur les lieux, mais ils ont refusé. En terminant, je tiens à remercier le service d'incendie de Dalhousie de ses efforts pour répondre à cette scène d'accident. Je vous remercie!
