Fellow Hussars, greetings I sincerely hope you are home and safe. These last few months have been difficult, as we go forward this winter things are looking better with the possibility of a Vaccine for all Canadians, I am hoping this will reduce our stress and concerns during these unprecedented times.

Until you have received your vaccine, follow the guidelines that your local government experts suggests, we may see the end of Covid-19 in a short time but we must remain vigilant.

In the meantime, please stay close to the ones you love, and stay safe.

We have suspended all activates until further notice.

REGIMENTAL VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE Usually, the regimental Christmas lunch is a period many members of the regiment and association look forward to. A day of sports, a regimental parade followed by a great Christmas feast, then some time to sharing our exploits over the year with our favorite beverage in our hand, this comradery cannot be beat.

Par les années passées, le dîner de la troupe a toujours constitué un évènement prisé par les membres du Régiment et ceux de l’Association. La journée de sport, la parade régimentaire et le

traditionnel repas de Noël, tout cela, bien évidemment, suivi par les discussions amicales lors desquelles on se remémore les exploits d’antan et le bon vieux temps, n’ont pas leur pareil pour solidifier les liens de camaraderie des hussards. Cependant et pour la première fois, le dîner de la troupe n’a pas eu lieu cette année. Le Régiment a plutôt célébré la fin de l’année par une parade en mode virtuel. Le commandant, le sergent-major régimentaire et les colonels honoraires n’ont accueilli que dix membres de l’unité : ces personnes ont reçu des médailles et autres récompenses ou encore une promotion.

However this is the first time for me as a member, that we didn’t have a traditional Christmas lunch. This year the regiment celebrated the day with a virtual parade.

The CO & RSM along with the honorary colonels received only 10 members of the regiment, these members were here to receive medals, commendations and promotions.

As is our regimental tradition the youngest member Trooper Matheussen was promoted acting Commanding Officer for the day, and what would a command team be without the oldest Corporal Waldteufel being promoted to acting Regimental Sergeant Major for the day. Both acting members of our command team gave superb speeches.

And in true Hussar tradition no dinner would be memerobale if we didn’t have the regimental ride.

Lead by the OC of B Squadron Maj Veilleux, and with the kind permission of acting CO Trooper Matheussen the ride was a great success.

Jour du Souvenir

Cette année, malheureusement, toutes les activités du jour du Souvenir ont été annulées en raison de la pandémie. Les membres du Royal Canadian Hussars et de l’Association ont été encouragés à réserver quelques instants pour se souvenir de ceux qui ont servi et mis leur vie en danger. Alors que la plupart d’entre nous l’ont fait en privé chez nous, deux membres de l’Association – Donald Greene et Donald Pelletier – ont pris le temps de déposer la couronne de l’association au cénotaphe de Saint-Hubert. Merci les gars, très belle initiative.

Remembrance Day

This year, unfortunately, all Remembrance Day activities were canceled due to the Pandemic. Members of the Royal Canadian Hussars and the Association were encouraged to set aside a few moments to remember those who served and put their lives at risk. While most of us did this privately in our homes, two members of the Association – Donald Greene and Donald Pelletier – took the time to lay the association’s wreath at the cenotaph in St. Hubert. Thanks guys, great initiative.

PLAQUE COMMÉMORATIVE

En 2019, l’Institut de cavalerie de Montréal a acheté une plaque commémorative pour indiquer l’ancien emplacement du quartier général du 6e Hussars a la Résidence Guérin qui est un ancien moulin seigneurial à St-Hilaire. À l’origine, le plan était d’avoir la plaque montée sur le mur de pierre qui longe la route.

Comme ce plan a été rejeté par la ville, la plaque a été déplacée vers un lutrin qui a été placé dans un jardin

de l’autre côté de la route.

MEMORIAL PLAQUE

In 2019, The Montreal Cavalry Institute purchased a commemorative plaque to indicate the former location of the headquarters of the 6^th Hussars at the Guerin residence and old seigneurial mill in St-Hilaire.

Originally, the plan was to have the plaque mounted

on the stone wall that runs along the road. Since this plan was rejected by the city, the plaque was moved to a lectern which was placed in a garden on the opposite side of the road. Below, you can see a picture of Michel Abourousse putting the final touches on the installation, and a group of St. Hilaire residents admiring his work.

NOUVEAUX FILMS SUR LES PAGES HISTOIRE DU SITE WEB DE L’ASSOCIATION DU RCH

Si vous vous aventurez sur les pages d’histoire du site Web de l’Association RCH, vous trouverez un nouveau lien menant à une histoire de fond et deux films qui documentent les escortes fournies par le Royal Canadian Hussars pour le couple royal lors de leur visite à Montréal en 1939. L’un de ces films montre la séance d’entraînement de l’escorte à cheval avant l’événement. L’autre film est une collection de segments extraits d’autres films dans le domaine public. NEW MOVIES ON THE HISTORY PAGES OF THE RCH ASSOCIATION WEBSITE

If you venture onto the History Pages of the RCH Association website, you will find a new

link leading to a background story and two films that document the escorts provided by the Royal Canadian Hussars for the Royal Couple when they visited Montreal in 1939. One of these films shows the training session of the horse-bound escort prior to the event.

The other film is a collection of extracted segments from other films in the public domain. The second film is set to music which comes from a practice session of the Montreal Welsh Male Choir and members of the RCH Association while they were preparing to sing

“Men of Harlech” at a military tattoo in 2017. If you listen closely you can hear the voices of Ray Kirkwood, Denis Gilbert, Bethan Mowat, and numerous others.

C’est avec tristesse que nous avons appris du décès d’un ancien membre de l’unité, Léo Régimbal. Léo a transféré au Royal Canadian Hussars au début des années 90 après avoir vécu en tant qu’instructeur de cadets dans un corps de cadets affilié à St-Hubert.

Il a servi en tant qu’officier responsable du quartier maitre et officier

commandant de l’escadron de support avant de finalement passer au 51e Bataillon des services à titre de capitaine-adjudant, puis de déménager à Ottawa, où il a travaillé au quartier général de la Défense nationale.

Selon Louise Chamberland « J’ai connu Léo au RCH au début des années 1990, alors que j’étais commis-chef et lui commandant de l’escadron de support. Étant deux personnes des métiers de soutien dans un environnement des armes de combat, nous sommes devenus rapidement des acolytes avec la même passion, répondre aux besoins de soutien du régiment.

Malgré la distance et les années, l’esprit de corps, propre au régiment, ainsi que cette belle complicité qui a débuté au RCH, sont toujours restés. Par la suite, à chacune de nos rencontres, c’était comme si on s’était vu la veille. Je garde le souvenir d’une personne dévouée et passionnée pour son travail. C’est avec une grande tristesse que je dis ‘’Bon fin de mission mon ami’’.

It is with sadness that we learned of the death of a former member of the unit, Leo Régimbal. Leo

transferred to the Royal Canadian Hussars in the early 1990s after working as a cadet instructor in an

affiliated cadet corps in St-Hubert.

He served as the quartermaster officer and

commanding officer of the support squadron, before finally moving to the 51st Service Battalion as Captain Adjutant and then moving to Ottawa, where he worked at National Defence Headquarters. According to Louise Chamberland “I met Leo at the RCH in the early 1990s, when I was chief clerk, and he was the

commander of the support squadron. Being two people of support trades in a combat arms environment, we quickly became collaborators with the same passion, fulfilling the support needs of the regiment. Despite the distance and the years, the regiment's esprit de corps, as well as the beautiful complicity that began at the RCH, have always remained. After that, every time we met, it was as if we had seen each other the day before. I remember someone who was dedicated and passionate about his work. It is with great sadness that I say ''Good end of mission my friend'.

Subject: 2020 Year-end Letter

We are writing first to wish you the best of the season, but also to thank all those who provided support during the year, and to encourage others to consider a year-end donation.

Our principal project, the regimental history book, is near to completion. It has been delayed slightly due to some health problems of one of the participants, difficulties in collecting high-quality photographs, and other factors related to the pandemic. It should be published early in the New Year. Our focus will then turn to the production of a French-language version.

In addition, we have completed several smaller projects, one being the placement of a commemorative plaque at the former headquarters of the 6^th Hussars in Mont St- Hilaire. The plaque was purchased last year, however the city objected to it being mounted on the stone wall along the road, so a lectern was purchased and installed in the garden across the road. In addition, the Institute completed a project that assembled clips from several films in the public domain and consolidated them in a 9- minute film showing the escorts provided by the regiment when the royal couple visited Montreal in 1939. This film, and another one that shows the 17^th Hussars training for the event, can be accessed through the history page of the RCH Association website (https://rch.ca/en/rch- history/). Finally, the Institute was able to make a $2,000 donation to the Regimental Unit Fund.

We thank all those who have supported our efforts, and we encourage all others to donate before year-end. We particularly need to raise $100,000 if we are going to be able to publish a French-language version of the history book while carrying out our regular work. In recognition, the names of people who donate funds for the history book before December 31, 2020 will be listed in an appendix to the book. What a nice way for you to ensure your place in history.

Nous vous écrivons d’abord pour vous offrir nos meilleurs vœux en cette période des Fêtes mais également pour remercier tous ceux et celles qui nous ont apporté leur soutien au cours de l'année et pour encourager les autres à envisager un don en cette fin d'année.

Notre principal projet, le livre d'histoire régimentaire, est presque terminé. Il a été légèrement retardé en raison de certains problèmes de santé de l'un des participants, des difficultés à amasser des photographies de haute qualité et d'autres facteurs liés à la pandémie. Il devrait être publié au début de l’année. Nous nous concentrerons ensuite sur la traduction française.

Nous avons aussi réalisé plusieurs autres projets de plus petite envergure, dont l’installation d'une plaque

commémorative à l'ancien quartier général du 6e Hussars à Mont St-Hilaire. La plaque avait été achetée l'année dernière, mais la ville s'est opposée à ce qu'elle soit installée sur le mur de pierre longeant la route, de sorte qu'un lutrin a dû être acheté et placé dans le jardin de l'autre côté de la route. De plus, l'Institut a réalisé un projet visant à rassembler des extraits de plusieurs films du domaine public et les consolidés dans un court métrage de 9 minutes montrant les escortes fournies par le régiment lors de la visite du couple royal à Montréal en 1939.
