The study abstract in English

The present study dealt with a topic entitled « The impact of a Cognitive Behavioural Counseling Program Upon the Psychological Adjustment of the student who suffers from social withdrawal », and the study sample was chosen from Mohamed Khidher University of Biskra, in Algeria. and precisely from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences.

The study aimed, on the one hand, at detecting the impact of the counseling program, with a cognitive behavioural trend, upon psychological adjustment through cognitive, academic, emotional, familial and social adjustment ( social harmony ) , and on the other hand, at adressing a behavioural emotional problem represented by social withdrawal in order to reduce its appearance, considering it is problem within problems of pour social harmony, and this through the verification of the continuity of the program's impact after the end of the counseling sessions during the follow period.

The study sample consisted of twelve (12) students chosen from common trunk students in both the department of social sciences, and the department of human sciences, after the necessary methodological conditions, for chosing the sample to be submitted to the experiment, were fulfilled, and which consisted in using the quasi-experimental design for each single group, therefore the study relied on the experimental method.

The researcher relied on many criteria to design, and build both measurement tools, and which are the social withdrawal scale and the sychological adjustment scale. The researcher also investigated the psychometric competency of these scales before applying them, in addition to a data form used to know the sample properties. Moreover, the researcher established, designed and executed the couseling program, which is considered, in this study, to be the independent variable ; and the management of counseling sessions was achieved through the group counseling interview the content of which is the same as the theme ( topic ) of the counseling program, its aims and styles and used tools.

(11)

As for the results of the present study, it should be noted that there are statistically significant differences, between the average degrees of people of the research group, in the level and dimensions of social withdrawal behaviour, prior to applying the program, and after applying the program in favour of measurements after the application of the program.

There were also statistically significant differences, between the average degrees of people of the study sample in the level of psychological adjustment, and its dimensions prior to applying the program, and after applying it in favour of measurements after the application of the program;

however, these differences did not appear after the application of the program for the Research group.

In the end the results obtained indicate that the cognitive-behavioural counseling program, has a positive impact in improving psychological adjustment, and reducing social withdrawal behaviour for people of the study sample. So, the present study proposed a model, among models of counseling programs which need to be taken seriously into account by applying them, and generalizing there benefits in different teaching stages, thus it is advisable to focus on the necessity to estabish a national centre for psychological counseling , the most important purpose of which being to train specialists in psychological counseling, and psychotherapy so as to ease the process of getting closer to students who hide there positive social interactions and therefore hinder their academic, and professional career and their personality.
