Among species of this family those belonging to the genus Lycodes were studied in detail by Vladykov and Tremblay (1936).

Andriashev (1954, pp. 266-315) suggested some changes in the nomenclature for certain Quebec Lycodes, which are noted for the respective species.

108. GYMNELIS VIRIDIS (Fabricius) 1780 — unernack Rare.

109. MELANOSTIGMA GELATINOSUM Gunther 1881 —

Rare. Six specimens, 55-125 mm., caught in deep water off Trois Pistoles during 1935, were tentatively identified as M. gela-tinosum. The late Dr. .1. R. Norman of the British Museum of Natural History, who compared some of our specimens with typical M. gelatinosum from the Straits of Magellan, considered the Quebec material specifically distinct from the type specimen.

During the recent years, several specimens had been caught in Quebec waters (Leim and Day, 1959) and in the Atlantic Ocean.

Previous to making an exact identification of Quebec specimens we are planning to reexamine all available material. If eventually St. Lawrence specimens prove to be distinct from the typical M.

gelatinosum, then they should be called M. normani.
