Vilay: I think the best place for souvenirs is in the morning market.

Jose: What can I find from this market?

Vilay: Well! For souvenirs, you can find T-Shirts, jewelry, antiques, traditional Lao Bags, silk scarves, cushion covers, etc.

Jose: Does everyone know this market?

Vilay: Yes. It’s the biggest and the most famous market in Vientiane.

Jose: Oh, really? How far is it from this hotel?

Vilay: It’s about a 15 minute walk or 5 minutes by tuk-tuk.

Jose: OK. Thank you. I’ll go there by tuk-tuk.

Vilay: It’s my pleasure.

4. Grammar note – The superlative of adjectives

Usage

- Superlative makes comparison among three or more things.It expresses the extreme or highest degree, quality or characteristic of a thing in comparison to other things in a group.

- It is common that "the" is used before the superlative adjective.

Superlative formation - est is added to the end of a 1-syllable adjective 2 syllable adjectives add ‘the most’ to the front

"most" or "least" are placed before adjectives that have 2 or more syllables, and don't end in –y

Adjectives ending in -e, only - st is added to the end of the adjective.

Adjectives that end in a consonant + vowel + consonant double the last consonant and add -est to the end.

Markets in Vientiane

There are many popular places for people to go shopping in Vientiane Capital. The famous markets where people always go shopping are: Talat Sao Mall (Morning Market), Khouadinh, Thongkhankham, NongDouang, ThatLouang, Sangjieng and other local markets. Most markets in Vientiane open at about 6 o’clock and close around 5 pm.

The Morning Market is the most famous and the biggest market in the centre of Vientiane. It’s famous for its variety of products and its good atmosphere. There are more goods available for people to choose from than in other markets. When people come to this market, they can find clothes, cosmetics, jewellery, gold, watches, electric appliances, electronic devices, leather products and souvenirs. People can also come and have lunch there. Shopping in the Morning Market, people will pay a little higher price for some products, but they will get better quality. Khouadinh Market is next to the Morning Market to the East. People come to this market for cheaper price products like shoes, clothes, household goods, fruit and vegetables.

Thongkhankham Market is the oldest market in the centre of Vientiane Capital. There are many stores in this market - clothes, household goods, groceries, food, vegetables, fruit and others. People can also go to this market very early in the morning to buy fresh farm products. Besides these markets, people can also go shopping at NongDouang and Sangjieng Markets to buy very cheap products from China.
