Introduction

English textbook for secondary school Book Five is the fifth in a series of seven textbooks which are currently developed to respond to the new policy of the Ministry of Education and Sports on the reform of general education from 11 years to 12 years. Upon the new educational reform, the Ministry of Education has decided to add another year to secondary school program in academic year 2009-2010. To implement the new policy, the Foreign Language Resource Center at the Research Institute for Educational Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters at the National University of Laos have formed the team to develop the Curriculum and write the textbook with teacher’s guide through financial support of the Basic Education Sector Development Project (BESDP).

Along with the textbook, the teacher’s guide has been provided in order to help teachers perform their teachings effectively. The teacher’s guide has included teaching techniques for each step of the lessons. There are also some instructions how to use teaching aids and some suggestions for teachers and students how to create teaching aids for their own classes.

However, the textbook is produced under the time pressure; therefore, some minor errors could not be avoided. The Foreign Language Resource Centre highly appreciates all comments and suggestions from readers s and these are considered as a great contribution to the quality assurance of the textbook as well as to the development of the Lao National Education. The Research Institute for Educational Sciences avails itself of this opportunity to express its sincere thanks to all contributors.

Kham: Yes, of course. The Lao traditional family is an extended family and it is an important unit.

John: Do both men and women do the same work?

Kham: No, not really. The men usually do most of the heavy work, but the women are expected to do lighter work.

John: And what about the elderly people?

Read the following text.

The Lao traditional family

The family is an important unit in Laos.

There are obligations of mutual help and support towards relatives of both the father and the

mother. Work is usually shared among family members according to their age and gender.

The men do most of the heavy work on the farm, as well as hunting, building, and fixing tools. Women are expected to do almost all the domestic tasks such as carrying water and firewood, husking rice, cooking, spinning and weaving, and making clothes. Elderly people do lighter work and child-minding.

Lao children are brought up to be self-reliant from an early age. They learn correct behaviour by watching their elder brothers and sisters. They also learn important skills from their elders by imitating. Older children have more responsibility than their younger brothers and sisters. All children are expected to obey their elders.

A family in Vientiane

Somphanh and Chanthalay have been married for twelve years. They have two children, one is ten and the other is eight years old. They live in an apartment in Vientiane. The apartment is near Chanthalay’s mother’s house. It is quite large and certainly big enough for the family.

Chanthalay has an important job with the government. She is very busy and often has to travel on business, so she is away from home very often.

Somphanh works as an engineer, so he is less busy than his wife. He can spend more time at home with the children. This means that Somphanh and his children have a lot of responsibilities around the house. They do most of the chores. Chanthalay’s mother sometimes comes over to help with the washing and ironing.

Somphanh does most of the shopping. He goes to the market and cooks for the family almost every day.

My house

My name is Chamnong. I’m sixteen, and I live in Pakse with my parents. We have a Lao-style traditional house.

Our house is made of wood. It has a thatched roof, and it’s built on stilts about two metres high. There’s a large veranda at the front where we eat, receive guests, and relax. A lot of activities take place under the house.

For example, my mother has a loom and she weaves fabrics there. My sister and I like playing there because it’s cool and shady.

There are some fruit trees around the house. We have tamarind, mango and coconut trees, and banana plants. Along the fence at the front, there are some flowers. The toilet is outside the house, and there’s a well by the fence. Next to the well, there’s a place where we can take a shower.

The house is not very big, but it is big enough for my family. Because the house is surrounded by trees, it’s shady and cool. I like living there.

All schools have rules. If students break the rules, they will be penalized.

Schools in the Lao PDR have a system of discipline points.

Each student starts the school year with 600 points. If a student breaks a rule, he / she will lose some points. The teacher will inform the student if the teacher deducts his/her points. When the student loses 100 points, the teacher invites the student’s parents to school. The parents and teacher discuss the way to help the student. If the student loses 600

points, he / she will have to repeat the class.

Here are some penalties for rule-breaking at secondary schools:

- Miss an activity lose 10 points

- Not wear uniform - Come to school late

- Miss saluting the flag lose 20 points - Have long hair (boys)

- Drop rubbish in the school yard - Use mobile phone during learning hour

- Speak or talk impolitely at school lose 40 points - Cannot sing the national anthem lose 50 points - Wear jewelry to school

- Cheat during a test - Destroy things at school

- Have your ears pierced(boys) lose 100 points - Smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol

- Behave badly at home

- Say bad things to others, especially the ethnic groups

- Play cards lose 200 points

- Take drugs

- Break the traffic rules lose 300 points
