The self-governing institution, Fiskeriets Hus, supports the nomination to the UNESCO immaterial cultural heritage list, of the traditions of Nordic clinker boat building.

We consider it extremely important that these traditions are entered in the UNESCO immaterial cultural heritage list.

Fiskeriets Hus is a museum and an aquarium displaying the cultural history ofHolmsland Klit.

One of the main attractions in the museum is the display of Andreas Jensens' sea-going boat, "Thomas", built around 1850 in Stadil. Boats of this type were used for fishing in the open sea off the West Coast of Jutland. At the beginning of the l 800s there were about 40 boats of this type on the coast between Nymindegab and Thorsminde, and in 1840 there were 18 on Holmsland Klit.

In 1993 Fiskeriets Hus started building a reconstruction of Andreas Jensens boat. Still sailed by the support association, the replica boat was launched in 1996.

Built with larch and weighing about 5 tons, the boat is approximately l O metres long with a beam of 3 metres.

The characteristic of these sea-going boats, was a low and beamy clinker built hull, almost symmetrical above the waterline, very beamy right out to the ends, with markedly outward sloping stems. Beiow the water line they were narrower at the stern with a flat bottom making the boat well suited to shallow water sailing, and to dragging up a beach.

The suitability of this type of boat for both open sea sailing and beach landings was proven when in 1997 when the replica boat was used in TV-Midtvest's recording of the film "Children of God'.

By maintaining and sailing this clinker built boat, Fiskeriets Hus, both as an institution and a museuin, works together with the museums supporters, to preserve and continue the traditions of the boat.

In addition to the preservation and reconstruction of this boat, Fiskeriets Hus also provides infonnation for vocational training in schools where the emphasis is on wooden boat building training.

The museum is open all year-round. During the winter months the sea-going boat replica can be seen under a canopy in front of the Museum, while in the summer months the boat is moored at Tyskerhavn harbour in Hvide Sande.
