Abstract
The hostile en ironments of space ill require that human life be ond Earth be mediated b man ad anced technologies and the man operationall
prescripti e s stems needed to manage them. Such sociotechnical s stems ill be characteri ed b hierarch , routine, and continuous monitoring. An humans li ing in space ill spend the entiret of their time under conditions characteri ed b such s stems. Under constant sur eillance, totali ing hierarch , and
circumscribed routines, the prospects for democratic social relations appear dim. I offer up se eral frames that can be used to consider social relations among future spacefarers. B considering perspecti es on technolog studies, group ps chological processes, and legal institutions I e plore the question of democratic equalit in space from multiple perspecti es. I suggest that
contemporar discussions of designs for future spacefaring societ should center on ho those designs ill influence democratic equalit , and I offer some
preliminar sketches of hat this might look like.
I ie m contributions as s nthesis and reframing. M hope is that this ork begins to bring subject matter e perts ho do not t picall appl their e pertise to space to do so.
