The f e l l o w c a r r i e d o u t a l i t e r a t u r e review on t h e p r o p e r t i e s of s t e e l a t e l e v a t e d t e m p e r a t u r e s , i n c l u d i n g work done by T.T. L i e a n d T.Z. Harmathy, by a p r e v i o u s f e l l o w and by European r e s e a r c h e r s . T h i s i n f o r m a t i o n was u s e d f o r p r o j e c t 3-E.
The F i r e S e c t i o n h a s f a c i l i t i e s f o r measuring t h e t h e r m a l p r o p e r t i e s o f b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a l s a t e l e v a t e d t e m p e r a t u r e s and i s c o m p i l i n g a d a t a base. The f e l l o w c o n t r i b u t e d t o t h i s d a t a b a s e by t e s t i n g t h r e e p r o t e c t i o n m a t e r i a l s a s p a r t of p r o j e c t s 3-B and 3-D.
Pire Remistaacc of Small Protected Structural Steel Columns (Project
3-D)
The f i r e r e s i s t a n c e of s m a l l hollow s t e e l columns w i t h t h i c k s p r a y a p p l i e d f i b r o u s and c e m e n t i t i o u s p r o t e c t i o n was i n v e s t i g a t e d t h r o u g h computer t h e r m a l a n a l y s i s and e i g h t f u l l - s c a l e t e s t s . The r e s u l t s were
p r e s e n t e d a t a n ASTM symposium on f i r e r e s i s t i v e c o a t i n g s . M o d i f i c a t i o n s t o t h e M/D (mass o v e r p e r i m e t e r ) formula p r e d i c t i n g f i r e r e s i s t a n c e of t h e s e columns were proposed.
