De nautilus komt uitsluitend, voor in tropische wateren, in het zuidwesten van de Grote Oceaan. De meeste soorten

komen voor 1987 tussen noordoostelijk Australië en zuidelijk Indonesië. Het dier

leeft op de bodem, op een diepte van enkele honderden meters tot dicht bij de waterspiegel en wordt.
