in diamagnetic Co(a~ac)~ the "Fe absorber impurities (0.5-3 at.%) occur uniquely in the high spin Fe3+ configuration, with paramagnetic relaxa- tion effects between 1.5 and.190 K. The 5 7 ~ e emis- sion spectra (fig. 1) reveal'the coexistence of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in their high-spin confi- gurations. Part of the Fe3+ component (60 f 5 3 of the area from 4.2 to 190 K) is split by paramagne- tic relaxation whereas another part is not affec- ted by these effects and shows up merely as a dou-

blet (20f5 % of the total area). The Fe quadru- pole doublet represents 2 0 + 5 % of the total area.

In anhydrous Co(a~ac)~, the 5 7 ~ e absorber 2+

impurities occur as high-spin Fe ions with two sets of different hyperfine interaction parameters (fig. 2) corresponding to the non-equivalent crys- tallographic sites occurring in this complex /I/.

Paramagnetic relaxation effects are observed for

2+

the Fe ions below - 3 0 K and are investigated as a function of temperature and of applied magnetic field. They characterize the occurrence of a dou- blet spin-orbit ground stafe arising from the per- turbation,of a well isolated orbital singlet: The 5 7 ~ e emission spectra in C~(acac)~ reveal, also the

2+

two preceeding unequivalent Fe sites, in addition 2+

to a new Fe doublet and an ~ e component. The ~ + relative spectral intensities are equal at 77 and

2+ .

150 K (65" 3 for the normal Fe lons, 10f 3 %

2+

for the new Fe component and 25 f 3 % for the Fe3+

component). They cannot be determined at 4.2 K be- cause of the paramagnetic relaxation effects. The resonance widths were,investigated as a function of the absorber thickness and were found to be na- tural for the regular ~ e components ~ + (W =

exp 2+

0.30 m / s ) whereas .both ahe new Fe and ~ e com- ~ + ponents are significantly broadened.

In Co(a~ac)~.2H 0, the absorption 5 7 ~ e spec- 2

tra reveal a single Fe pattern (fig. 3) in the

high spin state. The emission spectra reveal both 2+

at 4.2 and 77 K a new Fe component (20f3 % of 3+

the spectral area) and an Fe component ( 17

+

3 % )

2+ .

in addition to the regular Fe ions (63f3 %) ;

the latter present unbroadened resonance widths

whereas the two other components are significantly

broadened.

In the three source hosts under investiga-

tion the 5 7 ~ e atoms created by EC decay from 5 7 ~ o ,

are observed partially in their normal electronic

and structural configuration, defined as corres-

ponding to that of the 5 7 ~ e absorber impurities.

The resonance lines corresponding to these normal

ions are unbroadened and are therefore attributed

to simple substitutional sites in unperturbed mo-

lecular environments. In all three complexes we

observe the additional stabilization of both iso-

valent iron decay products in perturbed structural

environments and aliovalent iron species, i.e. 2+

Fe ions in Co(a~ac)~ and pe3' ions in Co(acac) 2 and Co(acac)*.2H 0. These spectral components are

significantly broadened, due likely to a distribu-

ions do not present the expected paramagnetic rela-

xation phenomenon. The features observed in the

source experiments can be understood in the frame

of the self-radiolysis model developed previously

to account for the after-effects of the EC decays.

Paramagnetic relaxation effects would be suppressed

for those ~ e ions in the vicinity of paramagnetic ~ +

centers created as a consequence of the local

self-radiolysis by the Auger electrons and X-rays,

because of the enhanced spin-spin interactions /2/. The stabilization of reduced aliovalent species in

Co(a~ac)~ is consistent with the radiolytic reduc-

tion simulated in this host by an external irra-

diation /3/ at a dose comparable to that of the

internal self-irradiation. The observation of new

isovalent iron in C~(acac)~ and Co(a~ac)~.2H~0

agrees also with this model, the nature of the ali-

ovalent states being determined by competing accep-

tor-donor reactions between the radiolytic €rag-

ments and the isovalent Fe decay charge state.
