OVERVIEW OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY IN JANUARY 2003
The purpose of this document is to provide information concerning the operation of the French public transmission network and power system during the past month.
The data published are interim figures dated 15 February 2003.

During the month of January 2003, the French electricity consumption record dating back to 17 December 2001, with a demand of 77,080 MW, was bettered on several occasions. The new power record was recorded on Wednesday, 8 January at 7.04 p.m., with a consumption peak of 80,190 MW.
National consumption in January 2003 showed a rise of 3.9% compared with that of January 2002, with an additional 8 "Peak Day Withdrawal" (EJP) tariff option requests in January 2003 compared with January 2002. This variation is explained by temperatures below 1.9°C in January 2003 compared with January 2002. Adjusted for climate contingencies, monthly consumption is up 1.8%
over that of January 2002. At the end of January, the cumulative consumption over the past 12 months is stable compared with the prior year and is up 1.6% in adjusted value.

The overall volume of injections comes to 52.9 TWh, up 2.9 TWh compared with January 2002.
As was the case last month, thermal generation has dropped compared with the period of the previous year (- 0.6 TWh), while hydro generation has risen considerably (+ 3.7 TWh) due to particularly low water availability in January 2002.
Imports in January 2003 are down 0.2 TWh compared with those of January 2002, whereas exports are on the rise, by 0.8 TWh.

January 2003 witnessed the commissioning of single circuit n°4 of the new 400 kV Tavel-Tricastin line on the RTE network. This equipment serves in part to meet the increase in electricity consumption of Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
The power network of this French region has been highly saturated for a number of years now, requiring substantial imports. It also permits an improved utilisation of the renewable energy generation sources located nearby in the Alps. This new high-capacity line going through the departments of the Gard, Vaucluse and Drôme over a distance of 40 km has made it possible to fully restructure the power network of the region, substituting for about 100 km of existing overhead lines which have reached their capacity limit.
