ESTABLISHMENT OF SUB-REGIONAL 'tF!:.:i:B'l.OidWJliiim~"i . . OF THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICAThe follcwing is a ccmmunicaticn dated 27 February 1962 received from the Chief Delegate of Mali with regard to the establishment of
sub-regional offices of the Ccmmission:
"Wi th reference to your letter No. ORG 100 (7) of 27 July 1961, I have the honour to inform you that my Government attaches the highest importance to the establishment of'a regional office at Bamako.
The Republic of Mali occupies an exceptional situation in West
,
Africa. It has frontiers with seven African States: Algeria, Guinea, the Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Niger; Senegal and UpPer Volta. Between its capital and the outside world regular daily air services are provided bOoh by our national air transport company, Air Mali, and foreign air transport companies - Air France, UAT, TAl,CSA and, very soon, Air Afrique. There is, moreover, heavY road traffic between Bamako and Algeria, Ghana, the Ivcry Ccast, Mauritania and Upper Volta.
We consider Bamako a particularly suitable site for the first West Afrioan office.
MY
Government is prepared, within the limit of its resources, to assist the Economic Commission fcr Africa to establish such an office. To that end it is making a request fcr assistance to the United Nations
Special Fund." 0
