HUMANISTICA LOVANIENSIA

JOURNAL OF NEO - LATIN STUDIES

Vol. 68.1 – Spring 2019

(2)

Humanistica Lovaniensia. Journal of Neo-Latin Studies (ISSN 2593-3019) is a KU Leuven based double-blind peer-reviewed international journal that appears twice a year at humanistica.be. It welcomes articles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish on Neo-Latin language, literature and culture, as well as critical editions and translations of Neo-Latin texts.

Volumes 1 through 16 (1928-1961) were edited by Henry de Vocht as a series of monographs on the history of Humanism in Leuven. Starting with volume 17 (1968) Humanistica Lovaniensia appeared annually as a Journal of Neo-Latin Studies. In 2018, after a half-century of annually printed editions, first under the pioneering editorship of Jozef IJsewijn (1968-1998), then under his successors Gilbert Tournoy (1999-2008) and Dirk Sacré (2009-2017), the journal became an online-only open access publication. Anyone can read, download, print and disseminate all articles in their original, unabridged form.

Authors publishing in Humanistica Lovaniensia retain the full copyright of their texts. Any use of articles published by Humanistica Lovaniensia should acknowledge their origin and respect all rules concerning copyright and intellec- tual property.

The Humanistica Lovaniensia volumes that were previously published in print (1968-2017) can still be purchased from Leuven University Press, who also publish the Supplementa book series. These volumes can also be consulted on JSTOR, with a moving wall of three years.

From the Editors

Last November our colleague Tom Deneire stated his intention to retire as editor because of an imminent career switch that would make it all but impossible for him to maintain his usual commitment to the journal.

We agreed that he would pass the torch at the end of 2018 and are glad to announce that we were able to find a competent and enthusiastic successor in David Amherdt (Université de Fribourg), who joined the board in January 2019.

Long before becoming one of the editors, when working first as an assistant and then post-doctoral researcher at KU Leuven and the Huygens Institute in The Hague, Tom served as the sole editorial assistant for Humanistica Lovaniensia’s issues 56 (2007) through 62 (2013), single-handedly copy-editing all accepted contributions to our polyglot journal.

His expertise in both Neo-Latin studies and digital humanities proved to be invaluable during Humanistica’s transition towards its current shape, which he helped realize and oversaw while he was curator of the Special Collections of the University of Antwerp Library.

We wish Tom all the best for the new phase in his career and we would like to express our deep appreciation and lasting gratitude for his long years of service to Neo-Latin scholarship and for his dedication to the well-being and continued vitality of Humanistica Lovaniensia.
