INDEX OF STATE STANDARDS OF THE U.S.S.R. 1973
The material that follows is a preliminary, partial translation of the Preface and Table of Contents of the Index of State Standards of the U. S. S. R. 1973. These are commonly known as GOST standards. Division Zh covers Building and Building Materials.
The complete index of the se standards in two volume s
(Vol. I - 734 pages; Vol. II - 364 pages) is held in the Library of the Division of Building Research. Some of the GOST standards themselves are already available in the Library and others may be obtained by arrangement, as required, under a technical exchange agreement with Gosstroi, the U. S. S. R. State Committee on Construction.
This Technical Note will be circulated to selected Canadiq.n agencies as further information from DBR/NRC on U. S. S. R. codes,
regulations, and standards on construction, which are the subject of one of several technical exchanges under the Industrial Mixed Commission Working Group on Architecture, Building Materials and Construction.

Raising the quality of m.arketed products and im.provem.ent of their consum.er appeal has a direct influence on the growth of public productivity, acceleration of the tem.po of econom.ic building, econom.y of m.aterial
resources, and the m.ore rational use of basic reserves.
The Central Com.m.ittee of the Com.m.unist Party of the Soviet Socialists and the Soviet Governm.ent are carrying out a policy for the consistant developm.ent of national standardization .•.•
Revision and renovation of all old standards and technical conditions m.ust be carried out in the course of each 5 years.
The Index of State Standards of the USSR include s all State Standards in force as of 1 January 1973 and also the ratified State Standards, not yet in force.
Up to 1940, State Standards of the USSR were designated by the index OST (All-union Standard), and were replaced henceforth by the index GOST. GOSTandard USSR revise s the All-union Standards, re-placing them. by State Standards or revoking them. as obsolete. Up to
-2-the latest revision -2-the OST's have All-union validity and are published in this index.
Branch (OST) and Republic (RST) Standards and also Technical Conditions (TU) developed and ratified in accordance with GOST 1.0-68 to GOST 1.5-68, GOST 2.1 14-70 and GOST 2-115-70, are published in the index of Branch and Republic Standards and Technical Conditions.
