Following the recommendations of the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee at the Fifty-first Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Executive Board awarded the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize for 2005, by decision EB115(5), to Dr Kamel Shadpour (Islamic Republic of Iran) for his most significant contribution to the objectives of primary health care in the geographical area in which Dr Shousha served the World Health Organization.
Dr Kamel Shadpour is an experienced and internationally recognized public health specialist from the Islamic Republic of Iran, whose contributions in both national health policy development and community health care delivery have been very significant. He has been involved as the lead person in major national public health programmes in the Islamic Republic of Iran, including especially the development of the primary health care system, which assures access to 95% of the population, as well as medical education, in particular community-based medical education development, basic minimum needs programmes, training of general practitioners, and monitoring and evaluation of health services.
In many of these programmes, he has been (and in some cases still is) the focal person. He has been a tireless crusader for the integration of health services and health professional education. He has served as adviser to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and consultant to most international health and developmental organizations, including WHO. Dr Shadpour has been a strong link in promoting and implementing the WHO strategy of Health for All. He has played a pivotal role in coordinating with WHO, public health programmes that have had a significant impact on national health. Dr Shadpour graduated in Medicine from the University of Tabriz in 1962, obtained a Masters in Public Health in 1967 and a specialty degree in Family Health in 1990. He is the author of numerous publications in English and Farsi and has translated many important international publications into Farsi.
The 2005 Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize will be presented to Dr Kamel Shadpour by the Chairman of the Fifty-second Session of the Regional Committee during the opening session.
The Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee is also scheduled to meet during the Fifty-second Session of the Regional Committee to consider nominations for the prize for 2006. In accordance with the Statutes, the Committee shall be composed of the following members: the Chairman and two Vice- Chairmen of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Chairman of its Technical Discussions.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization acts as Administrator of the Foundation and the Regional Director acts as Secretary of the Foundation Committee.
