Award of Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize for 2006

Following the recommendations of the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee at the Fifty- second Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Executive Board awarded the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize for 2006, by decision EB117(4), to Dr Sa’ad H. S. Kharabsheh (Jordan) for his significant contribution to the development of national public health in the geographical area in which Dr Shousha served the World Health Organization.

Dr Sa’ad H.S. Kharabsheh is being honoured for his significant contribution to national public health development in Jordan. Dr Kharabsheh graduated in medicine from the University of Baghdad in 1975. He obtained an M.Sc. in epidemiology in 1987 and was appointed Head of the Public Health Department of Balka Province. In 1991 he was appointed Director of Disease Control, Ministry of Health, and in 1999 Director-General of Primary Health Care.

Since 2003 he has served as Under-Secretary of Health. During his career Dr Kharabsheh has been closely involved in maintaining Jordan’s poliomyelitis- free status and elimination of neonatal tetanus, achieved in 1995. He was responsible for implementing a number of key public health programmes, including universal salt iodization, flour fortification to combat iron deficiency anaemia, vitamin supplementation for schoolchildren, pre-marital screening for thalassaemia, and development of an effective national disease surveillance system. He has conducted numerous health system research projects in Jordan and was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health in 2000.

The 2006 Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize will be presented to Dr Sa’ad Kharabsheh by the Chairman of the Fifty-third Session of the Regional Committee during the opening session.

The Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee is also scheduled to meet during the Fifty-third Session of the Regional Committee to consider nominations for the prize for 2007. In accordance with the Statutes, the Committee shall be composed of the following members:

the Chairman and two Vice-Chairmen of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Chairman of its Technical Discussions.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization acts as Administrator of the Foundation and the Regional Director acts as Secretary of the Foundation Committee.
