Initié et dirigé par l’artiste new yorkais Todd Shalom, le projet Elastic City vise à faire du spectateur un participant actif dans des marches performatives qui ont pour objectif de provoquer des rencontres inédites et poétiques avec des lieux publics. En suivant un itinéraire préalablement cartographié, l’artiste dirige des actions visuelles, auditives et tactiles afin d’engager le public dans une œuvre multisensorielle qui échappe aux catégories établies, voire à une discipline donnée. On peut toutefois parler de « site specific walks », puisque ces marches ne peuvent être dupliquées dans un autre lieu sans que l’œuvre soit substantiellement altérée.

Conçus comme de brefs récits performatifs qui s’expérimentent collectivement, les itinéraires de Shalom sont élaborés avec beaucoup d’intuition, une intuition à laquelle le territoire urbain donne le ton. L’artiste procède d’abord à une série de marches informelles afin de prendre le pouls du quartier d’accueil, pour ensuite compiler les données recueillies et créer un cadre conceptuel qui lui permettra de fixer un parcours. Il s’agit ensuite de planifier des actions gestuelles ou rituelles pour les participants. Très variables, celles-ci peuvent impliquer des réponses corporelles aux monuments rencontrés dans l’espace public, ou des créations ponctuelles avec certains objets de la rue.

Pour sa première montréalaise, Todd Shalom va cibler le quartier Mile-End, où est situé le Centre d’art et de diffusion CLARK. La spécificité de ce volet montréalais ressort de l’emphase qui sera mis sur le « toucher » qui, loin du strict terme sensoriel, sera pensé dans ses acceptions psychologiques et affectives : l’artiste cherchera avant tout à créer une marche qui touche.

Elastic City a été présenté à l’échelle internationale, notamment à New York, Berlin, Londres, Mexico City, Paris, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, San Francisco et Buenos Aires, par plus d’une soixantaine d’artistes affiliés au projet et en partenariat avec différents musées, galeries, jardins publics et universités. Le Centre CLARK accueille la première édition canadienne du projet qui sera dirigée par l’artiste fondateur et directeur d’Elastic City, Todd Shalom.

ELASTIC CITY (MONTREAL) Curator : Aseman Sabet

Initiated and directed by New York artist Todd Shalom, Elastic City aims to make the public an active part of performative walks in order to generate unexpected and poetic encounters with the places we live in and visit. Using a pre-mapped itinerary, the artist deploys visual, auditory and tactile techniques in public space to engage participants in a multisensorial work that escapes the established categories, or any given discipline. The walk, however, is "site specific walks", as it cannot be replicated in another location without significantly altering the work.

Conceived as brief performative narratives that are experienced with small group, Shalom’s walks are constructed with a fair amount of intuition and influenced by his immediate surrounding. The artist goes on a series of informal walks around a neighborhood to take its pulse. From there, he gathers information and solidifies a conceptual framework to plan a route.

Next, various poetic responses are planned for the participants. These might include gestural or ritualistic actions. Participants might make monuments with their bodies in response to the monuments in public space or create a visual poem from objects they find on the street.

For Elastic City’s Montreal debut, Todd Shalom will work in the Mile-End neighbourhood, home to CLARK Gallery. What will define this project in Montreal will be the emphasis on the sense of "touch," not in traditional sensorial terms, but in its evocative psychological and emotional dimension: the artist aims to create a touching walk.

Over 60 artists been commissioned by Elastic City to lead walks in cities around the world including: New York, Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, San Francisco and Buenos Aires. The organization has also partnered with a range of museums and local galleries, public gardens and universities to present its walks. CLARK Gallery hosts the Canadian debut of Elastic City and presents this newly commissioned walk by the founder/director of the project, Todd Shalom.
