Exercise 12.1. Let n>2 and let Mn be the Moore space with H˜k(Mn;Z) =

constructed as the homotopy cofibre of a map Sn → Sn of degree 2. Since Mn = ΣMn−1, the set [Mn, Mn] of homotopy classes of pointed maps is a group. Show that in this group the order of the identity of Mn in strictly larger than 2.

Hint: view the map 2idMn as the compositionf∧id :S1∧Mn−1 →S1∧Mn−1, where f has degree 2. The homotopy cofibre of this map is RP2∧Mn−1. If 2idMn ' 0 we would have

RP2 ∧Mn−1 'Mn∨ΣMn.

Show that this is not possible by showing that Sq2 acts non-trivially on the coho- mology of RP2 ∧Mn−1 (use the Cartan formula and Exercise 2.3, where Sq1 =β was computed for Mn).

Remark: in fact [Mn, Mn]∼=Z/4.
